Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO) is looking for a Content Editor to join its content team. ILAO’s Content Editor sustains and improves the legal resources on IllinoisLegalAid.org, expected to serve more than 2 million users in 2018. As a part of the content team, you’ll help people better understand their legal problems with clear writing that distills complex concepts and processes into clear, concise explanations and steps. The Content Editor reports to the Content Director.

Edit and package content - 50%

  • Acts as the point person for volunteer translators and vendors to provide content to address the needs of Polish and Spanish speakers in Illinois.
  • Develops creative and effective ways to repurpose existing content in new formats (articles, videos, infographics and “how-tos.”).
  • Distills complex concepts and processes into clear, concise explanations and steps in everyday language
  • Updates content and takes a critical eye to existing content
  • Oversees ILAO’s Illinois law tracker and works with subject matter experts to ensure that our content remains up to date
  • Creates and publishes regular newsletters for ILAO’s various constituent groups
  • Manages ILAO’s YouTube channel


Engage and manage content contributors - 25%

  • Manages translation project workflow using translation vendors
  • Engages with our loyal, energetic network of volunteer translators
  • Provides regular status reports on engagement for translated content
  • Assists with ILAO's annual volunteer appreciation celebration


Other activities - 25%

  • Moderates 6 legal-aid community discussion groups using Google Groups
  • Coordinates feedback and responds to user questions about our legal resources
  • Keeps current with emerging technologies and Drupal content management best practices
  • Participates in staff meetings and other administrative meetings
  • Participates in fundraising events and campaigns
  • Other responsibilities as assigned


Competencies include:

  • Editorial experience at a website, newspaper, magazine, blog or similar
  • Experience in published online media content
  • Skillful writer, preferably with experience writing about complex issues for non-experts
  • Can motivate and support writers, volunteers, and vendors
  • Researches, recommends and pilots new ways to package content
  • Proficiency in another language, Spanish or Polish preferred
  • Conscientious and curious
  • Self-motivated and takes the initiative to research solutions to problems
  • Data-driven and decisive; the desire to evaluate, revise and continuously improve
  • Passion for the mission and vision of Illinois Legal Aid Online


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant discipline (journalism, information science, library science or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum three (3) years experience writing and managing online content (at least one year of proofreading, and familiarity with content strategy and working within external and internal style guides)
  • Experience using Jira, Sprout Social, MailChimp, Zapier and other online tools a plus, but will train if needed
  • Expertise in using social media to engage users and promote content, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and other platforms
