Job Title:        Immigration Unit Program Director / Attorney

Program:        Immigration Law

Reports to:     Director, Civil Division

FLSA:       Exempt

Summary:

The Immigration Unit Program Director will lead a legal services unit, consisting of attorneys, DOJ-accredited representatives, and legal support staff. The Immigration Unit provides high-quality legal representation, advice, and information to non-citizen community members and their families. We seek to vigorously defend the individual rights of our clients and ensure that they are treated with dignity, equality, and respect. In addition, we represent those fleeing persecution in their home country and seeking protection in the United States.

The Immigration Unit Program Director will also provide direct representation and handle administrative and judicial appeals. The position requires travel within New York State and the Finger Lakes Region.

The Program provides representation in the following areas: asylum, family-based applications, removal defense, VAWA, SIJ applications, U and T visas, DACA, and a variety of other immigration matters.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide staff supervision of caseloads, quality of representation, staff training and mentoring, case acceptance and assignments, and guide team building within the unit
  • Grant reporting and participation in financial, programmatic, strategic and administrative aspects of project management
  • Assist with grant writing and fund development
  • Provide legal counsel and representation in immigration proceedings. Representation includes, but not limited to:
  • o   Draft and review all pleadings, motions, and papers;
  • o  Interview clients;
  • o  Conduct investigation; file FOIA requests;
  • Represent clients at all appearances, hearings, and proceedings; and where appropriate, notices of appeal before the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Federal District Court and state court if necessary
  • Provide community outreach, education, and training to community partners
  • Maintain complete, accurate and detailed case notes in all case file through our case management system, Legal Server
  • Conduct legal research in each case before case assignment as required
  • Maintain knowledge of legislative changes and current case law, and keep team informed; attend Continuing Legal Education training and ensure team participation in training
  • Attend and participate in LASROC’s Immigration Law staff meetings and general LASROC meetings/gatherings
  • Provide legal support to other programs from time to time as may be necessary
  • Additional duties at the discretion of the Director, Civil Division

While performing job responsibilities, the employee will maintain consistent communication with staff and clients and must be able to exchange accurate information and communicate clearly about the results and outcomes of their work.

The person in this position needs to move about inside the office frequently to access office equipment, file cabinets, and mailbox. They also must be able to move to and from the office and courthouse.

Able to step into the Director role while carrying a reduced caseload

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor & admission to New York State Bar (Bar admission in another state is acceptable but would need to seek admission in NYS)
  • Minimum 5 years of legal practice experience and 3-4 years prior Immigration law experience, including litigating cases in immigration court and appeals
  • Prior supervisory or project management preferred
  • Ability to communicate in a language other than English preferred
  • High level of initiative, self-motivation, and organization
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Strong advocacy and negotiating ability
  • Ability to articulate thoughts and ideas effectively and accurately
  • Respectful and empathetic consideration for clients and staff members
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and community partner
