POSITION SUMMARY

Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) seeks an Senior Director of Accounting to oversee and strengthen its accounting and financial reporting systems as it continues to grow and expand its impact throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. Founded over 40 years ago, Maternity Care Coalition has assisted more than 135,000 families, focusing particularly on neighborhoods with high rates of poverty, infant mortality, health disparities, and changing immigration patterns. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of pregnant women and parenting families, and enhance school readiness for children 0-3. MCC has multiple program locations, 150+ staff and a budget of approximately $11MM.

The successful candidate will have five or more years of professional accounting work experience, possess excellent technical accounting skills and demonstrate a strong understanding of GAAP as it applies to non-profit accounting. Especially important will be the demonstrated ability to identify innovative financial reporting solutions for an organization with multiple funding streams and a wide range of departmental information needs. The candidate will also possess superb supervisory and communication skills as the position requires staff supervision and cross-departmental collaboration. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Accounting Operations

Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the Accounting Office activities including:

•    Supervise direct support team (Accounting Associates responsible for AP and AR)

•    Manage the operation of MCC’s financial accounting system (MIP)

•    Guide and monitor the month-end close process including month-end account reconciliations in order to ensure timely financial statement reporting

•    Ensure that accounting policies, procedures, and processes are established and followed in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and excellent accounting practices.

•    Oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions ensuring timely and accurate bill payment and invoice generation

•    Oversee payroll and benefit accounting

Establish and oversee effective Cash Management practices to monitor and control A/R Cash Receipts and A/P Cash Disbursements; and prepare cash forecasts.

Financial Reporting and Budget Development

Oversee financial reporting at the organization, program and contract level working collaboratively with program leaders and contracts management to support their reporting needs:

•    Support Contracts Management in producing internal and external financial reporting and variance analysis as needed.

•    Collaborate with Financial Planning and Analysis efforts as they emerge

•    Support VP Finance in the development of agency-wide budgets and projections / reforecasting

•    Establish processes and systems within MCC’s accounting systems to allow for centralized and program-level monitoring of spending associated with all projects/grants

•    Respond timely to internal requests for financial data and budget inquiries.

Year End Close and Annual Audits and Compliance Requirements

Oversee the coordination and successful execution of the year end close, annual audits, IRS Form 990 and other state and local tax entity reports:

•    Lead the fiscal year end close process, and the timely completion of the financial statement, federal award (Uniform Guidance / OMB-133), 403b plan audits, as well as the preparation and submission of the IRS Form 990 and other state and local tax entity reports.

•    Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements at the organization-wide level and in collaboration with the Grants Management and Program team for specific program-related contracts as they pertain to finance and accounting.

Other

•    Support the VP Finance to:

o    Develop policies and procedures, internal controls, and new initiatives within MCC as they related to finance and accounting

o    Develop the annual budget with senior management, with input from department heads

o    Works on forecasts and pro-formas as needed

•    Identify strategic opportunities to improve processes within department and throughout MCC

•    Serve as back-up for Accounting Staff functions

•    Set up new grants in accounting software

•    Update the Net Asset Rollforward quarterly

•    Perform other related duties as assigned by the VP Finance

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Qualifications

Required

•    Minimum five years full time progressively responsible accounting experience with at least two years in a non-profit with multiple and diverse funding streams

•    Minimum two years full time progressively supervisory experience of accounting staff

•    Professional experience that includes technical expertise in accounting, financial statement preparation, cash management and experience overseeing complex multi-step accounting or financial reporting projects 

•    Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of accounting information systems; MIP preferred.

•    Experience in a leadership or strong support role in financial audits (GAAP, Uniform Guidance)

•    Operational knowledge and experience implementing accounting and business process systems.

•    Experience in developing, refining, and maintaining sound financial and internal control systems.

•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all levels of the organization.

•    Demonstrated experience showing self-direction and ability to work independently and collaboratively and to do so while managing numerous deadlines.

•    Demonstrated advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel

•    Superior attention to detail, with excellent analytical skills

Preferred: More of the above.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree

Preferred: BA/BS Accounting major and/or CPA
