Job Summary

The Workforce Development Senior Manager will work under the direction of the Director of MS Professional Workforce Development to develop and implement creative strategies to improve access to high quality MS care by increasing the number of knowledgeable healthcare professionals involved in MS care. This includes strategies to grow the professional workforce and also enhance the existing healthcare professional workforce through education and other engagement opportunities across the spectrum of healthcare disciplines. This role will also be involved in advocacy initiatives that impact access to healthcare and support intersections in advocacy-healthcare access work.


·        Participate in development and implementation strategies to expand the MS professional workforce

o   develop outreach initiatives through which health professionals and students are encouraged to train and practice in MS care in collaboration with the Director of MS Professional Workforce Development

o   Lead the planning, coordination and evaluation of the Medical Student Mentorship program

o   Engage and partner with the Healthcare Provider Engagement team to implement medical student mentorship application process, communication and planning timeline

o   Provide staff training on workforce expansion initiatives including student outreach, student mentorships, etc.

o   identify gap areas and develop strategies to improve the workforce development in those areas with field staff

o   Assist the Director of MS Professional Workforce Enhancement in the implementation of Society enhancements to the Clinical Fellowship program

o   Engagewith other professional organizations to discuss collaborative initiatives to attract new talent and train clinicians in MS care

o   Interact and communicate with and follow students, residents and fellows to measure the impact of our outreach strategies

o   Keep local offices informed of fellows or former fellows in their areas


·        Participate and lead efforts to collaborate, develop and implement professional education opportunities across multiple disciplines including neurology, nursing, rehabilitation, mental health and wellness

o   Lead planning for national professional meetings including full oversight and coordination with healthcare providement engagement staff, services resource team, and marketing

o   Direct Healthcare Access team strategy for exhibit and professional education sessions at the annual Consortium of MS Centers conference.

o   Implement training for Society staff on the approach to professional education and use of Professional Education Implementation guide

o   Incorporate Society resources into all educational programing and information

o   Implement efforts to improve participation of healthcare professionals in educational programs

o   Utilize a wide variety of outreach for professional education including live, web based, CME journal articles, journal clubs, etc.

o   Coordinate with Marketing Dept on the marketing of programs to healthcare providers

o   Collaborate with Manager, Healthcare Access to develop and collect outcomes data from educational programs

o   Manage day to day professional workforce programming and other initiatives

o   Provide support to volunteers, including faculty and program planners

o   Maintain/update professional calendar and ensure local staff are providing to local healthcare professionals

o   Engage with healthcare professionals and staff to best understand and appreciate the knowledge gaps for MS healthcare professionals

o   Maintain own knowledge about MS and MS care

o   Develop clear understanding of barriers and challenges to healthcare access


·        Participate in the planning and implementation of advocacy initiatives that address access to high quality MS Care

o   Serve as representative on healthcare access-advocacy cross functional initiatives to ensure alignment with healthcare access goals

o   Lead effective two way communication between healthcare access and advocacy teams through participation in advocacy meetings and regular reporting to healthcare access team

o   Build and maintain communication plan to healthare providers around advocacy priorities, work, volunteer opportunities and activist network communications

o   Collect and synthesize information from healthcare providers around advocacy concerns and priorities and establish process to share with advocacy team

o   Coordinate support and engagement of healthcare access content experts to inform advocacy positions and priority work.



·        Increase the number of Society volunteers, recognizing and recruiting talent

·        Engage volunteers, effectively communicating and facilitating meaningful opportunities across all functions

·        Recognize the contributions of all volunteers

·        Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with community organizations, and businesses seeking to advance the mission of the MS Society

·        Coach volunteers to successfully complete designated assignments, enhance skills and promote professional growth and competency development



·        Attend/actively engage in training, professional development, conferences and staff meetings

·        Participate on work teams, internal committees as needed

·        Develop a strong working knowledge of all Society information systems

·        Implement and follow NMSS risk management policies and procedures.

·        Carry out other duties as assigned by direct Supervisor, Associate Vice President, and/or Vice President of Healthcare Access.


Minimum Education:

·        Bachelor of Arts or Science preferably in Social Work, Psychology, Health Education, Public Health, Nursing, Rehabilitation, Public Relations, Health or Business Administration

·        Bachelor's degree preferred with a minimum of 5 years' experience developing and implementing educational programs for professional audience. Experience in patient advocacy preferred.


Minimum Experience:

·        Must have the ability to present information to individuals at all levels, both inside and outside the National MS Society.

·        Must have strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

·        Requires ability to exercise judgment, work independently toward goals and manage multiple projects.

·        Must be able to lead with co-workers, management, collaborating agencies and the community.

·        Must have strong supervisory skills and be skilled at leading teams and individuals who are not direct reports.



·        Must have excellent computer skills and be familiar with the use of Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word and Power Point.

·        (IF APPLICABLE) This position will be required to drive/travel on Society business. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation. The Society does run motor vehicle checks for all positions which require driving and the applicant must meet the Society guidelines.
