Homes solve homelessness. We know what policies and strategies are most effective in ending and preventing homelessness. For decades, New York City has lacked the political will to enact proven policies that solve, rather than manage, homelessness. RxHOME is leading a multifaceted communications, engagement and activation campaign focused on building the public support and political will to urgently implement real solutions to homelessness in New York City.

The Director of Organizing will oversee RxHOME’s grassroots campaign to build the public support and political will to implement real solutions to homelessness. The Director of Organizing will be responsible for developing the RxHOME organizing strategy and assembling the team of field organizers who will engage in base building, trainings, and activation activities. The Director of Organizing will play a critical role in educating, engaging and activating New Yorkers in order to build the public demand for solutions and garner political support necessary to urgently act to end homelessness.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

STRATEGIC PLANNING

  • Design, lead and manage the grassroots outreach and engagement strategy for the RxHOME campaign
  • Work with the Director of Health Policy, the Director of Homeless Solutions Policy, the Director of Communications and the organizing team to craft engagement and activation strategies leading up to and under a new NYC mayoral administration
  • Draft and manage campaign calendar and oversee engagement and educational campaign events (in person and virtual as appropriate)
  • Collaborate with the Director of Health Policy, the Director of Homeless Solutions Policy, the Director of Communications and the organizing team to design and produce a candidate forum event

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING, INFORMATION COLLECTING, AND KPI METRICS

  • Understand the community and political power structures in New York City
  • Build relationships with community leaders and organizations
  • Determine the key performance indicator (KPI) metrics that the organizing team will use to assess our progress and inform organizational decision-making
  • Implement information collection procedures for outreach and engagement
  • Monitor KPIs and share progress reports with the Board and senior staff on a weekly basis 

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

  • Lead a team of organizers to building relationships with diverse organizations and businesses such as BIDs, healthcare providers, schools and real estate developers
  • Oversee relationships with the key homeless, human and social service providers who work in New York City
  • Partnering with select organizations for deeper engagement and organizing support

MANAGE COALITION AND NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED ORGANIZING

  • Manage a team of organizers who will work to identify and activate community members as well as build and nurture community coalitions to advocate for local housing solutions through a concentrated training and base building programs
  • Work with faith institutions and other community leaders to build support for solutions to end homelessness

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Extremely organized and deadline driven
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working on a community organizing project, electoral campaign, or neighborhood-based advocacy campaign
  • Experience leading and managing a successful field program on an electoral/ issue advocacy campaign or organizing effort
  • Ability to manage multiple and often competing deadlines
  • Experience working with membership or campaign management systems like Everyaction or Nationbuilder. Comfortable or has previous experience with Hustle (or other peer to peer texting programs)
  • Extremely proficient with a Mac or PC, Microsoft Office and Google Drive
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders and partners, including business leaders, organizers, policy experts, elected officials, organization staff, etc.
  • Experience creating education-style materials & training curricula for audience engagement
  • Experience in direct staff management preferred, especially experience in directing team members and stakeholders that are not under direct supervision
  • Demonstrated success in internal and external collaboration, joint problem solving, and constructive team dynamics
  • Experience working on housing justice or homelessness advocacy issues is preferred but not required

The target starting annual salary for this position is $75,000 - $95,000, depending on experience.
