General Summary

Rafiki Coalition’s mission is to eliminate health inequities in San Francisco’s Black and marginalized communities through education, advocacy, and by providing holistic health and wellness services in a culturally affirming environment.

The Director of Communications & Development will partner closely with the Executive Director and Director of Programs to advance the work of Rafiki by implementing a local communications strategy to promote health and wellness priorities through traditional and digital media platforms – including managing social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, paid media, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), key messaging, blogs, web content and video.

The Director will also implement a local community relations strategy, inclusive of cultivating relationships with local journalists, key stakeholders, and service providers, preparing media materials, talking points and other tools to inform key audiences about the work of the Coalition and our mission. The Director will also provide communications counsel to local staff and volunteers, and work in partnership with the Executive Director to support crisis communications and issues management as needed.

Essential Duties:

  • Contribute to the creation of vibrant and engaging experiences that reflects Rafiki’s culture and values – from national conferences and celebrations to weekly community events.
  • Provide general executive communications support in close partnership and alignment with the Executive Director to help prepare messaging that shares Rafiki’s story – with internal and external audiences.
  • Develop and execute communications plans that promote Rafiki’s mission and priorities. Approaches include, cultivating ongoing relationships with local partners, organizations and regional institutions, message development, PSAs, social media, etc.
  • Ongoing management of social media to refine and build consistency, amplify key topics, extend reach, and drive engagement with the Bayview Hunters Point community.
  • Work collaboratively with local partners and institutions to develop integrated approaches that advance progress toward health goals, including appropriate advocacy and community positioning strategies.
  • Recruit, engage, and train local volunteers and volunteer influencers to serve as Rafiki voices and experts in traditional, non-traditional, and social media.
  • Track communications coverage and produce reports.
  • Willingness to accept other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Required qualifications and experience:

·      Master’s Level or Above Graduate Degree Preferred.  College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree.

·      Exceptional skill in written and oral communications, including business writing, news writing/editing for print and broadcast, conversing by telephone and on video and conducting presentations to large or small groups.

·      Ability to connect interpersonally and work effectively with culturally and socioeconomically diverse individuals.

·      Ability to recruit, organize, train, and manage volunteers and consultants. Ability to delegate and accomplish goals through volunteers and consultants.

·      Ability to direct, execute, and manage initiatives.

·      Knowledge of media and communications principles, ethics, practices, and techniques, including technical requirements.

·      Knowledge of community organization, program, fundraising and marketing principles, practices and techniques is preferred.

·      Must have at least intermediate knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 or higher used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs are preferred.
