About DOROT’s Jewish Summer Teen Internship Program: DOROT’s Jewish Summer Teen Internship Program is a nationally recognized four-week summer internship program for entering 10th – 12th graders from diverse Jewish backgrounds and experiences. The program, which operates in Manhattan, Riverdale and Brighton Beach, Brooklyn (new in 2020), offers a new way for high school students to explore a range of Jewish values and communal responsibility while gaining meaningful leadership experience through intergenerational community service.

Position Summary: We seek an experiential Jewish educator who is a creative thinker and experienced group facilitator. Experience working with American born high school students from the Russian Jewish community is critical; a passion and skill for developing teen leadership; an understanding of and ability to create meaningful intergenerational connections and the knowledge needed to put experiential Jewish learning and values at the center of the teen’s internship experience.  

DOROT seeks a bilingual (Russian & English) Jewish experiential teen educator, who is passionate and creative, to join our dynamic team to help launch and facilitate our newest program located at the Shorefront Y in Brooklyn in summer 2020.

This position is full time from June 1 to August 14, 2020. Our ideal candidate will begin working one day each week at DOROT for 3 – 4 hours from February to May. During this time they will be trained as a DOROT facilitator and will begin planning with the professional team that will support them during the summer program. Full time summer work will initiate in our Manhattan-based Jewish Summer Teen Internship program during the first summer session (6/22 – 7/16) and will transition to our Brighton Beach site for the second summer session (7/20-8/13).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Co-facilitate DOROT’s Jewish Summer Teen Internship Program in Manhattan in collaboration with DOROT staff.
  • Utilize DOROT’s existing curriculum and tool kit to plan and facilitate all program components including orientation, Jewish service-learning, teen leadership, and reflection sessions.
  • Connect teens’ exploration of Jewish values to their service and intergenerational experiences in the program.
  • Serve as coach and mentor to teen interns individually.
  • Ensure the development of a strong collective teen cohort.
  • Train and support interns to plan and facilitate intergenerational programs.
  • Coordinate with Shorefront Y staff to manage program logistics and administrative needs.
  • Serve as liaison between parents, teen interns, and the Shorefront Y.
  • Supervise a college intern.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • BA required. Graduate students welcome.
  • Bilingual in Russian and English
  • Experience in experiential teen programming
  • A passion for working with high school students
  • Exemplary and engaging group facilitation and mentoring skills
  • Motivated self-starter who works collaboratively with team members
  • Comfort and ease working with the elderly
  • Proven ability to embrace the diversity of Jewish connections, including all backgrounds and expressions that represent multiple narratives
  • Excellent communication skills both spoken and written
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office 2010
