SUMMARY: The Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership (CSPL) is seeking to hire an Advancement and Communications Associate who will be responsible for contributing to the growth and development of a powerful Spirit-centered organization with a team of talented and courageous leaders and staff. CSPL’s focus includes working to co-transform people, parishes, institutions, and communities by developing a powerful base of highly motivated, strategic, prayerful, discerning, and collaborative spiritual and public leaders who courageously act on their values, which are rooted in the Catholic traditions.  

Strategic Communications Development & Implementation (40%): 

  • Collaboratively coordinates CSPL’s communications branding including co-developing messaging, talking points, artistic and branding style and narrative arcs to be used publicly by the organization for fundraising, campaigns, social media, newsletters, and podcasts. This branding is done collaboratively with the board, staff, and leaders. 
  • Collaborates with leaders and senior staff in the development and implementation of strategic communications plans for organizing campaigns.
  • Co-develops media strategy provides proactive media outreach, creates media analysis and fields inquiries from the news media; helps prepare grassroots members and staff for contact with the news media. 
  • Incorporates media strategies and social media into organizing communications on campaign plans. 
  • Writes and edits newsletters, talking points, speeches, letters to the editor, op-eds, background pieces, fact sheets, press kit materials, and other materials as needed for various campaigns. In many cases, pieces are collaboratively written with leaders and staff. 
  • Works directly with member leaders and organizing staff to get pictures, quotes, and video clips that center grassroots voices into campaign materials. 
  • Monitors media coverage of various campaigns, maintains clipping files, makes recommendations on ways to improve media coverage. 
  • Performs other duties as required to support CSPL’s grassroots organizing efforts and strategies to increase movements for social justice within the Catholic Church. 
  • Develops an ongoing strong network of relationships of reporters, journalists, and other communications allies, in Catholic, Christian, and secular media fields.  

Proposal Development & Grants Management (40%): 

  • Co-leads with the Executive Director with research, drafting letters of inquiries, funding applications, grant proposals, and grant reports. 
  • Leads in assembling programmatic and media materials for events and donor development/fundraising meetings. Maintains electronic files of typically requested attachments for funding applications. 
  • Manages maintenance and updating of the Advancement plan and calendar including annual foundation calendar with deadlines for reports and proposals 
  • Develops an ongoing strong network of relationships of funders, donors, and other philanthropic allies, in Catholic, Christian, and secular funding fields. 

Individual Donor, Communication, and Special Events (20%): 

  • Lead staff person to support CSPL’s Advancement Committee, which includes board members and grassroots members who are invested in supporting CSPL’s grassroots fundraising plan and strategy. Coordinates with CSPL Advancement Committee and staff to plan and organize fundraising events, briefings, and meetings, as assigned. 
  • Leads the scheduling, production, and mailing of seasonal and special appeals. Maintain and produce mailing lists including segmented donor and contact lists in the database. Leads with writing content and preparing materials deliverables for fundraising appeals. 
  • Manages CSPL’s email lists including coordinating with staff to update contacts and providing analysis of reach and response. 
  • Leads communication with individual donors and new contacts, including managing a strategy for contacting and engaging members and donors to maintain their engagement and upgrade their relationship to the organization over time. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in organizational communications, media/public relations, fundraising and grant writing, and community outreach/community organizing. 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is highly preferred.  
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and co-train community members across multiple cultures and demographics including race, gender, age, language, economic status, and including but not limited to sexual orientation. 
  • Experience working with faith-based social justice organizations and/or the Catholic Church is a significant plus. 
  • Possess existing relationships and contacts with local and national Catholic, faith-based and secular media outlets and grassroots and grasstops funders. 
  • Comfortable working with people of all faith traditions and working knowledge of the Roman Catholic and Christian faith traditions. 
  • Strong desire to grow spiritually and professionally as a leader within the Catholic and Christian faith traditions. 
  • Openly seeks to understand and critique systems of oppression and is invested in bottom-up organizing to dismantle these systems.

REQUIRED SKILLS 

  • Excellent writing, speaking, analytical, listening, and organizational skills 
  • Capacity to think analytically about social, racial, economic, and environmental issues and develop spiritually and theologically informed communications strategies in collaboration with grassroots leaders and organizers.
  • Highly organized, creative and self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Skilled in articulating the vision and mission of the organization
  • Ability to support colleagues and provide/receive constructive feedback 
  • Ability to work as part of a strong staff team as well as independently; thrive in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Desire to learn about community organizing, politics, history, theology, etc. 
  • Possess superb communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills 

WORK LOCATION: 

Staff work from the CSPL office in Maywood, IL. Staff receives an organizationally issued laptop and cell phone.
