Reports To:      Settlement Programs Manager            FLSA:    Nonexempt (part-time 4-6 hours/week)                                                                                   

GENERAL SUMMARY

An English as a Secondary Language (ESL) instructor works to improve the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of adult students from different language backgrounds that are at the beginning and intermediate levels of English proficiency.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*

  • Teach students English vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills.
  • Prepare lesson plans based on students’ current capabilities and syllabus goals. Utilize establish curriculum and supplement with additional resources where needed to make instruction relevant and engaging.
  • Strengthen students’ ties with the community by weaving the history of Salem into the curriculum through visits to our museum and participation in other programming, such as our Community Conversations on the Topic of Immigration.
  • Reflect on success of lessons, and make suggestions for improved lesson delivery, student groupings, and classroom management.
  • Accept feedback and incorporate suggestions for an effective and positive learning opportunity.
  • Serve as liaison between students and Gables’ management.
  • Maintain accurate records for daily attendance and student performance for an adult classroom of approximately 10-30 adult students.
  • Notify Gables’ manager of classroom material needs (for example, pencils, pens, art supplies, books for children/adult students, snacks).
  • Obtain contact information from all students in order to develop a contact list to be used in case of class cancellations, emergency situations, etc.
  • Accept feedback and incorporate suggestions for an effective and positive learning opportunity.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support and introduce guest lecturers/teachers for specific topics as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree is desirable.
  • Graduate certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages and/or Master of arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages preferred.
  • MTEL certification in teaching ESL to high school students is preferred.
  • Knowledge about the process of language acquisition and the general stages that demonstrate progressive fluency.
  • Bilingual fluency desirable – Spanish/English; Portuguese/English or Haitian Creole/English to facilitate communication with immigrant groups in our North Shore area.
  • A sense of empathy, humility and a deep desire to work with immigrant adult students and their children.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong public speaking skills needed by a teacher.
  • The ability to establish clear professional boundaries. The Gables prohibits any coaching or instruction outside of the contractually agreed-upon classes mentioned in the instructor’s hiring agreement with The House of the Seven Gables.
  • The ability and willingness to give a list of other teachers or resources to any student seeking additional coaching and tutoring.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends according to established class schedules.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and training in CPR and First Aid highly desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The ability to work on-site during program hours (Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 -8:00pm).
  • Constant use of speech, hearing, and sight abilities
  • The ability to project voice to a full classroom of up to 30 students
  • The ability to lift up to 20 lbs to move/transport/deliver program supplies

Availability: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 -8:00 p.m.

Pay: $25.00/hr
