The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Assistant based in Miami to support the Global Initiative team. This position is fixed-term and part-time (15 hours per week) and is anticipated to start July 2021 and end June 2022. This position focuses on providing administrative support and is best suited for individuals interested in learning about HRW’s work and contributing to our development and outreach efforts for our US Territory with an emphasis on writing acknowledgement letters, conducting prospect research, event planning and donor engagement. This position will report the Miami Director with guidance from the Miami Associate.

This position may be based outside of Miami temporarily, until our Miami office fully reopens, as long as candidates are willing to work eastern time zone working hours. Due to COVID-19 many of our global offices remained closed or at a limited capacity; we will decide to open (or close) offices based on our internal standards and local requirements. The Assistant will be required to work remotely temporarily but will be expected to work from the Miami office when it is safe to do so. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.


1. Provide administrative support to the Miami team, including office management tasks, scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, liaising with vendors, and other tasks;

2. Provide support for virtual and in-person events, including annual dinners, receptions, meetings, briefings and other events throughout the year by preparing and designing invitations, managing RSVPs, and assisting with other tasks as needed;

3. Provide support for the Miami team’s relationship management efforts, including through creating prospect and donor lists, assisting with the translation of written communications and emails; maintaining the donor database by updating Florida donor and prospect records and information, and processing gifts from Florida donors;

4. Draft prospect profiles based on research into individual and foundation prospects; and

5. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.


Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is desired. Those currently enrolled in university courses will also be considered.

Experience: One year of relevant work experience is desirable.

Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish are required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple global locations are required.

2. Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.

3. The ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities, working effectively toward deadlines is required.

4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including donors and external partners are required.

5. Prior office or administration experience and proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications, especially Excel, are required; experience with Salesforce or other donor databases is highly desirable.

6. Experience translating written documents/communication between English and Spanish is desirable.

7. Basic skills in graphic design are desirable.

8. Strong interest in or experience with human rights issues is desirable.

Salary: The salary for this position is US $17.00 per hour.
