Title: Bilingual Services Coordinator

Trans Lifeline operates a peer support hotline for transgender people. In 2020, we will expand our services to include a Spanish speaking extension. We are hiring the person who will coordinate this new service. We are searching for a self-directed, highly skilled, Spanish speaker who is engaged in the movement for immigrant rights & trans immigrant liberation.

Organization Description

Trans Lifeline connects trans people to the community, resources, and support they need to survive and thrive--building a resilient trans community through trans-led direct services. Trans Lifeline’s Hotline cares for trans people through moments of crisis and suicidality. Our Microgrants program provides low-barrier grants to trans people in need of legal name changes and updated government IDs--as well as specialized support for trans people who are incarcerated or undocumented. By providing care, Trans Lifeline identifies the trans community’s most pressing needs and brings that expertise to the broad movement for LGBT equality.

Job Description

  • Coordinates volunteer and staff recruitment for Spanish language hotline.
  • Coordinates quality assurance for Spanish language hotline.
  • Collaborates with department leaders and the Communications Director to publicize information about the bilingual hotline.

  • Coordinates with the Technology Director to ensure services such as the dashboard and the phone tree are functional in Spanish.
  • Conducts direct outreach with Spanish-speaking communities we serve, including undocumented communities.
  • Takes calls on the peer support hotline, maintaining composure in high pressure situations such as suicidality and traumatic circumstances.
  • Upholds tenets of harm reduction, peer support ethics, equity and our informed consent policy. This includes compliance with our policy against non-consensual active rescue, aka not calling 911 on people who don’t ask for it.

Must-Have Skills

  • Fluent in Spanish and English.
  • Must live in the United States.
  • Experience in Spanish speaking immigrant communities (through lived experience or work).
  • Know the ins and outs of navigating the United States immigration system, including the detention system.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written in Spanish and English).
  • Ability to work on a remote team, demonstrating strong organization, communication, technological, and self-motivation skills.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with the legal and political landscape impacting Spanish-speaking trans communities, especially immigrant communities.
  • Experience establishing bilingual services in a place that did not have them before.
  • Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers.

Trans Lifeline is an equal opportunity employer. Transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex people, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants and formerly incarcerated people are strongly encouraged to apply. As essential duties for this position include providing peer support to transgender and questioning people, being trans and/or nonbinary is a bona fide job qualification for this position.

Please note: We will close the application on January 30th at 5pm PST. The position will start no later than March 23rd 2020.
