Position Description


Reporting directly to the Senior Operations Director while working closely with the Executive Director, the Communications Director will lead the communications and media activities for the organization. This position will develop a strategy to support policy, project-based, and development initiatives, as well as maintain day-to-day communications channels on social media. In collaboration with the Senior Operations Director, the Communications Director will generate a workplan that will elevate Climate Resolve’s brand in the public sphere and grow the organization’s audience. The Communications Director will work to ensure the organization's online presence is consistent with its brand and mission.

 

Responsibilities


Leadership & Management

  • Lead communications and media efforts on a variety of Climate Resolve’s initiatives
  • Manage relationship with Climate Resolve’s creative consultant team and Communications Interns
  • Assist the Senior Operations Director and Executive Director with organizational responsibilities; report to the Senior Operations Director on a weekly basis while working closely with the Executive Director on organizational initiatives
  • Occasionally represent the organization in coalitions, public meetings, and public events


Communications

  • Develop and implement a robust communications plan, including development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and identifying technologies to track and quantify performance
  • Prioritize winning earned media that amplifies Climate Resolve’s mission and name in the public sphere
  •  Develop and implement innovative marketing activities
  • Manage, maintain, and create original day-to-day content for the organization’s various websites and social media outlets, while tracking corresponding KPIs
  • As lead liaison with creative consultant team and Communications Interns, work together to generate and manage content of organization’s social media channels and website
  • Manage and disseminate monthly e-newsletter
  •  Write and disseminate press releases as needed, often in tandem with project-specific partners
  • Research and write original articles / blogs as needed
  • Re-establish Climate Resolve’s unique website of scientific studies concerning climate change in Southern California
  • Work with Senior Operations Director to integrate communications into all program-related workplans
  • Contribute to developing guidelines for the organization’s brand look and feel


Development

  • Assist with generating communications and media related to fundraising activities and events
  • Manage and disseminate email-based fundraising appeals


Qualifications

The Communications Director will be thoroughly committed to Climate Resolve’s mission. All candidates should have proven experience that may include:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s (preferred) in communication, journalism, environmental science, urban sustainability, or related field
  • At least four years of communication experience
  • Extensive digital communications experience with social media platforms, i.e. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, as well as search engine optimization for websites
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics, WordPress, and CSS preferred
  • Knowledge of climate and environmental communications best practices
  • Understanding of political landscape and media market of Los Angeles and California
  • Track record of effectively executing programs-related communications, i.e. able to turn a project into a compelling story
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments, working well under pressure
  • Experience supervising and managing interns, volunteers, and paid staff
  • Experience in communications, public relations, and an ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a supportive, complementary, and collaborative fashion with diverse groups of people
  • Important to be self‐directed, flexible, and able to work under tight deadlines
  • A congenial personality – can get along with others – and a sense of humor!
