Trout Unlimited is hiring a self-motivated and highly capable person to manage our inland trout program. Together with TU staff and partners, the successful candidate will identify, plan, and implement our program for wild and native trout conservation across the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountain region. The California Inland Trout Program Director will work out of and manage our Truckee office and report to the California Director. The successful candidate will work closely with state and federal agency partners, agricultural community members, conservation community partners and TU’s grassroots chapters.


  • Identify and secure funding for Inland Trout Program conservation priorities and staff needs; meet strategic planning goals and objectives; implement conservation programs and projects.
  • Function as a project manager with direct responsibility for selecting, financing, and overseeing contractors implementing specific habitat restoration projects.
  • Positively influence local, state and federal policy related to inland trout and mountain rivers, including, for example, fisheries management and forest plans. Understand state and federal policy and permits; work across internal interdisciplinary leadership teams; integrate the best available science; and build strong strategic partnerships.
  • Supervise and work collaboratively with the California Public Lands Restoration Manager and California Field Coordinator, along with an office that often includes AmeriCorps members and interns or temporary field technicians. Coordinate annual work plans and budgeting for the program.
  • Work closely with administrative, development, communications and conservation staff.

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree in natural resources management, aquatic ecology, conservation biology, forestry, fisheries ecology, public and environmental policy, or related field, plus a minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • Project management experience, including experience designing, implementing and directing multiple projects at once, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
  • Experience developing and successfully administering program and project budgets.
  • Ability to identify and build lasting relationships with Trout Unlimited chapters, agencies, landowners, and other partners. Ability to work with multiple and diverse partners in a highly collaborative and inclusive manner.
  • Demonstrated strategic planning ability and entrepreneurial thinking.
  • Understanding of California water issues, wild and native trout, watershed science and restoration, and fishing related recreation.
  • Ability to work both independently and in partnership other Trout Unlimited staff on fundraising, including identifying potential funding sources, drafting grant proposals and grant reports, developing relationships with funders and major gift donors to sustain the program.
  • Ability to motivate, lead and supervise regional staff, AmeriCorps members, interns and/or seasonal field technicians.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex conservation issues and TU’s mission to a wide range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of basic communications, earned media, video production and use of social media platforms to conduct public outreach about TU’s work.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently. Valid driver’s license and own vehicle required.
  • Passion for protecting and restoring trout streams and their watersheds required.
  • Love of fishing a plus.
