MAF is looking for a Philanthropy Associate who wants an opportunity to learn and develop within an organization that has a great reputation and leads with big ideas. The Associate will have primary responsibility for grant administration and reporting duties, while managing important details necessary to a well-functioning fundraising unit. You’ll bring analytical thinking and project management skills to round out a dynamic team of skilled writers and communicators, including our CEO, Philanthropy Manager and grant writer.

MAF intends to invest in the professional development of this position so that they can grow and develop, gaining increasing levels of responsibility and opportunity over time.

Our story: Mission Asset Fund (MAF) is a groundbreaking nonprofit on a mission to create a fair financial marketplace for hardworking families. Our award-winning social loan models build pathways out of the financial shadows for low-income individuals across the U.S. A hybrid between a fintech startup and community-based nonprofit, MAF retains a highly skilled and motivated team that is committed to promoting economic prosperity and leveraging tech for under-resourced communities.

In this political climate, the need to pivot quickly and be responsive to the needs of low-income people of color and immigrant communities is crucial. This past fall, MAF’s Fundraising team took on an audacious goal: quickly fundraise to provide fee assistance grants in the wake of the presidential administration’s attempt to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. And that we did. We raised over $4M in 24 days - doubling the amount of our operating budget. It was nothing short of amazing. It meant bringing on brand new exciting funders, people thrilled about our work and our mission, and lots of opportunity and growth.

As MAF grows, we need a passionate Philanthropy Associate who can work with our team to shape the future of our organization. Reports to: Philanthropy Manager

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising Support (80%):

  • Support the team to manage an active portfolio of government, corporate, and foundation funders and prospects.
  • Maintain master calendar of all grant deadlines, as well as schedule and track fundraising-related phone calls, meetings, webinars, trainings, and conferences.
  • Update institutional archives related to funders and campaign files, maintaining up-to-date records of proposal submissions and grant agreements.
  • Take primary ownership of collecting and submitting grant-related materials in a timely and organized fashion
  • Conduct research and write funder profiles on current and prospective funding sources, to prepare for phone calls/meetings and/or expand grants portfolio.
  • Proofread and edit narrative materials produced by other team members as necessary.
  • Coordinate and schedule monthly fundraising dashboard meetings with the CEO.
  • Update foundation and corporate donation records and contact lists in Salesforce database,
  • Sustain consistent external communications with program officers, consultants, donor advisors, and other stakeholders in MAF’s development strategies.
  • Manage correspondence and write appreciation letters for all foundation and corporate funders and individual donors.
  • Write letters of inquiry, concept papers, grant narratives, and grant reports as assigned.
  • Interface regularly with directors and executives to strategize on fundraising targets, compose narratives, and obtain programmatic data.

Communications Support (15%):

  • Maintain & develop the funder communications plan, website, social media, marketing materials, and other fundraising tools.
  • Execute communication strategies for developing and/or strengthening relationships with donors including annual reports (including working with a team of volunteer software engineers, drafting content, etc.)
  • Write blog posts and other written pieces for print or website, and provide feedback on others’ writing to help them improve.
  • Help consistently capture and share lessons learned.
  • Help organize occasional special events, including helping to manage logistics, communications, sponsors

General Operations (5%)

  • Collaborate with staff in making strategic decisions affecting MAF’s future.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities, participating in trainings and conferences provided to staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings, attend events, and otherwise contribute to strengthening the roots within our community.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Have a B.A. or equivalent experience and/or 2-3 years experience in nonprofit fundraising, grant administration or other relevant experience (for example, project management, relationship management, communications, copywriting).
  • Project management skills and relentless attention to detail: you can see the big picture and all its multiple moving parts.
  • Strong English language writing and communication skills.
  • Experience meeting external deadlines on a consistent basis.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
  • Proficiency with donor CRMs (Salesforce preferred) and experience using online fundraising software and project management systems like Classy and Asana.
  • Comfortable collaborating in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience working for social change in underserved communities.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • This is a full-time position with an anticipated salary range of $60,000-70,000. Salary & title will be dependent on experience.
