The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is a growing international climate organization building a team of passionate individuals working on solutions centered in equity. Founded in 1991, ISC’s mission is to unleash the power of communities and local leaders to respond to interconnected environmental, economic and social challenges to build a better future shaped and shared by all. For the past 30 years ISC has driven innovative and transformative solutions to climate change, from helping factories in Asia reduce greenhouse gas emissions to preparing for rising sea levels in Florida and building community resilience in US cities, ISC’s programs create collaborative solutions that embed equity in the transition to a green, low-emission economy.

Position Summary

ISC seeks a dynamic, energetic, and experienced program leader who will break new ground as the organization’s first Vice President, Programs for the organization. The successful candidate will contribute substantive vision, expertise, strategy and leadership to ISC’s global programs and growth. The ideal candidate will have relevant programmatic knowledge, substantial management experience, and considerable expertise in advancing equitable climate solutions. This new position will knit existing and new ISC’s programs together at the senior leadership level.

The Vice President, Programs, together with ISC’s President, senior Management Team, and the regional program management teams, will lead an equity-centered approach for the development, design, and integration of the organization’s overall mission, programming strategies, and policies of ISC. The Vice President will work with the President to ensure cohesiveness and integration of programming and programming strategy across the organization, and provide appropriate representation of ISC's issues to the public, ISC’s partners, audiences, and donors. The Vice President will enhance collaboration across all program areas and territories of operation. The Vice President will lead, manage, and mentor ISC's program staff; provide review and oversight of ISC's internal learning, monitoring, and evaluation; and be committed to ISC’s mission and goals.

The successful candidate will be an expert in the environmental, climate change, and sustainability fields, and experienced in supporting global partnerships. The VP will lead with equity on community- and locally-led climate change solutions that incorporate such factors as race and gender, and economic, social, and environmental justice concerns for ISC’s programs across the U.S. and Asia. The Vice President, Programs, integrates the values of equity, inclusion and diversity, balances a range of responsibilities, and works to advance ISC to higher levels of excellence.

This position joins our growing team at a time of pivotal transformation for the organization. As ISC celebrates its 30th anniversary, we welcomed a new president, Deeohn Ferris, and are refreshing our strategic plan with a renewed commitment to addressing the structural racism and income inequality in the U.S. and Asia that undermine efforts to build strong communities and regions as they respond to climate change. The ideal candidate will hold, and have demonstrated actions, illustrating the same commitment and values.

  • Build strategic partnerships, coalitions, and collaboration with external organizations and groups
