UIC Center for Literacy FAST Program: 

Our mission: The Center for Literacy is dedicated to serving the community through research, advocacy, and lifelong learning. Our vision is to break the cycle of poverty and collectively strengthen communities through family learning services. 

The Center for Literacy’s Family Start (FAST) Adult Education and Career Transition Program empowers and strengthens Chicago families by providing high quality adult education. Current and future Chicago families interested in continuing their basic education are enrolled in or referred to classes/tutoring in English as a Second Language, High School Equivalency (in English or Spanish) and literacy/numeracy. Learners also receive case management services, career transition support, and technology training. 


Job Summary/Function: 

Under the supervision of the Bilingual Literacy Manager and ESL Lead Instructional Coach, instructors teach adult and family literacy classes to Chicago Early Learning parents and family members. This is an opportunity to get involved in community-centered design at the ground level as the Center for Literacy embarks on a new community partnership in the Brighton Park neighborhood of Chicago. 


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach adult education classes (ESL - English as a Second Language) to serve the educational goals of Chicago Early Learning parents and family members
  • Assess and track students' progress on Illinois ESL Content Standards
  • Co-develop and design culturally-sustaining and responsive curriculum centering community knowledge and values
  • Integrate digital literacy or computers in instruction
  • Mentor volunteers as part of teaching team
  • Collaborate with Lead Instructional Coach, Transitions Specialist, and other staff members and community partners to develop individual education/transition plans and evaluate students' progress on their goals.
  • Collaborate with Host Site in continued community-centered program design 
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings which promote FAST programs, services, and program improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in professional development including becoming a Standards-Proficient instructor


Qualifications:

  • B.A. in Education, English, Latin American Studies/Sociology, Applied Linguistics, TESL or other relevant field 
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
  • A minimum of 1-year literacy teaching/tutoring preferred.  
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills required.  
  • Knowledge of adult/family literacy and Head Start/Chicago Early Learning programs desirable.  
  • Knowledge and experience with the history, assets, and challenges associated with the southwest side of Chicago 
  • Cultural competence and willingness to travel off-campus in various Chicago communities


Hours: 

Monday-Thursday 8am-2pm Friday 8am-12pm (28 hours) 

Teaching Location: Off-campus location on the southwest side of Chicago (Brighton Park & Back of the Yards) accessible by public transportation

Pay: Based on experience - $26,600 - $31,500 (this is based on 28hrs)
