    About the Democracy Security Project

    It’s the most dangerous time in the U.S. in decades. Rising political threats and intimidation threaten activists, authors, organizers, candidates, civil workers, changemakers, creatives, journalists, librarians, teachers, doctors, nurses, writers, and more. The Democracy Security Project (DSP) exists to provide durable solutions and support for anyone facing new or urgent threats to themselves or their work.

    Position Summary

    The DSP is hiring a Managing Director to oversee its efforts across the United States. The Managing Director will lead our growing organization in conducting outreach, building a coalition of organizational partners and resources both nationally and in states, assessing the security landscape, and providing safety solutions, training, products, and programs to nonprofit and advocacy organizations, including, but not limited to:

    • Increasing overall security awareness for changemakers
    • Providing training and direct support (proactive and reactive) to campaigns and organizations
    • Connecting advocacy campaigns and organizations to security experts and resources
    • Establishing relationships with local law enforcement agencies and facilitating connections with campaigns and organizations, where feasible
    • Activating and engaging nonprofit organizations and advocates in conversations about security and threat assessment
    • Developing strategies to hold perpetrators of political violence and harassment accountable for their actions

    The Managing Director will work to:

    • Lead, coach, develop, and retain a diverse team of both DC and state-based staff and consultants
    • Ensure the quality, consistency, timeliness, and excellence in DSP’s deliverables
    • Scale current programs, products, and systems and structure to support the goals and deliverables of DSP
    • Evaluate and prioritize security products and deliverables on an ongoing basis
    • Ensure effective systems to track and communicate program progress to partners, funders, and other stakeholders
    • Identify safety and security resource gaps within the progressive ecosystem, and develop strategies to fill them
    • Develop and execute forward-facing communication strategies and assets
    • Work with co-founders to create and execute new development opportunities and strategies
    • Other duties as necessary

    Skills & Requirements:

    • 2+ cycles of campaign or organizational management is strongly preferred
    • An understanding of or ability to quickly assess political and organizational landscapes, relationships, and context
    • Proven interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills, with the ability to quickly build and manage organizational and individual relationships
    • Strong written communication skills
    • Proficiency with G-suite and collaborative work tools
    • Ability to work independently, problem-solve effectively and creatively, and meet tight deadlines under pressure
    • Proactively fosters an inclusive atmosphere and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence - the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self– in meaningful, relevant, and productive ways
