GERES – Group for the Environment, Renewable Energy and Solidarity - is a French non-profit NGO created in 1976 after the first Oil Shock. Today, more than 200 staffs work on innovative and sustainable development projects in France and in 12 developing countries.

Environmental conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, reducing energy poverty, and improving livelihood of the poor are the main focus areas for GERES. The GERES team is particularly involved in the implementation of engineering solutions for development and providing specific technical expertise.

Activities include conducting energy efficiency programs, providing decentralized energy services for local economic development, supporting and developing renewable energies and promoting low carbon development models and Climate Change adaptation measures. These activities are always implemented in partnership with local stakeholders and communities on the basis of collaborative experience sharing.

In Southeast Asia, GERES has been working for several years in close collaboration with a variety of partners to address the issue of non-sustainable woodfuels consumption in the domestic and industrial sectors.



In Southeast Asia, GERES brings more than 20 years of experience in sustainable firewood production and consumption, including Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) with Community Forests, agroforestry, nursery establishment, Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and enrichment planting pilots, in-depth research on woodfuels consumption patterns in Cambodia and their impacts on forest.

More recently, GERES started to address the issue of non-sustainable woodfuel consumption in the industrial sector and has been working on models and financial mechanisms to promote sustainable thermal energy generation in the garment sector. However, funding remains scarce and GERES faces difficulties to pursue its missions within its current settings (few small-scale projects, limited resources to maintain international experts’ positions).


Under the supervision of the Southeast Asia Regional Director, the Regional Development Coordinator will drive the development of GERES’s project portfolio in Southeast Asia, with a strong need to secure funding for new interventions to start by the end of 2019. Depending on the success of the development strategy and the operationalisation of new projects, some perspective could exist within GERES for the regional development coordinator after one year.

The coordinator will work in close collaboration with the country representatives in Cambodia and Myanmar and with the Quality and Partnerships Manager in HQ. 


Important note: in 2018, GERES has initiated a global strategic work on its core fields of expertise and cross-cutting approaches, which shall contribute to identify and formulate new interventions relevant to the Southeast Asia region, building on GERES’s expertise at the global level. In this perspective, the Regional Development Coordinator will proactively look for interactions with key experts from the GERES Expertise Unit (GEX) and within other regions.


Main Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the Regional Development Coordinator include: 

-      To prospect development opportunities, lead the design of new interventions and support fund raising;

-      To raise GERES’s profile and contribute to increase its visibility at the regional level, promote its expertise and build strategic partnerships. 

Regional scope: Myanmar, Cambodia + exploratory countries: Lao PDR, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines

In order to be capable of being a relevant interlocutor for partners and donors, quickly get to know the global and regional background and key stakes for GERES’s development in the region.

Key areas to cover:

-      GERES works and expertise at the global level.

-      country priorities and National strategies related to rural energy access, renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change.

-      main donors’ country strategies in the region, who does what, who are the main players and where are the synergies with other interventions (stakeholders mapping). 

Prospection and fund raising

Contribute to designing a development strategy for the region over a 12-months period

Undertake prospective missions in the region, meet relevant stakeholders and identify partnership opportunities and relevant interventions.

Explore and identify relevant funding opportunities, consistent with GERES mandates and expertise (including consultancies works)

Lead the origination and the design of new projects, either alone or in partnership with other actors, from design to full proposal with international quality standards

Contribute to the negotiation of contracts and agreements with potential donors and clients.

Profile raising and visibility

Contribute to the development of user friendly material to present and promote GERES’s expertise.

Identify and attend relevant events where there is an opportunity to raise GERES’s profile. Participate as a speaker when possible.

Develop strong technical partnerships with key institutions to compliment and build GERES’s expertise, including but not limited to academic institutions and research centres and make sure they identify GERES as a relevant partner.

Build close and trustful relationships with key financial partners and make sure they identify GERES as a relevant partner.

Identify strong local partners showing good complementarities with GERES and build trustful relationships to allow collaborative work on future project design.


When relevant, and upon request from their hierarchy, contribute to collective works for the regional or the global development of GERES.



·        Status: French fixed term contract (CDDU) of 12 months

·        Paid leaves: 26 days per entire year

·        Other advantages: Monthly living allowance (420 USD), health coverage and contingency insurance, unemployment and retirement insurances (adapted for non-French nationalities), repatriation insurance

·        Travel : 1 return tickets per year between Home country and Mongolia to take & quit the position

·        Position based in Yangon with regular trips in the region
