Description

The Student Support Services Team at Future Chefs provides coaching and planning support for individual and groups of students throughout all phases of Future Chefs programming. In partnership with the Work-Based Learning Team, which is responsible for delivering key culinary instruction and preparation with students, the Student Support Services Team ensures that students develop essential employment and soft skills and create and implement post-secondary plans while also paying particular attention to students’ social-emotional health and well-being. Students first meet this team in the recruitment and enrollment process (i.e., generally Sophomore year) and engage with members of the team until post-secondary planning has been completed (i.e., generally two years out of college). The Student Support Services Team adopts a positive youth development approach in all its interactions with students to ensure that students successfully complete Future Chefs Programming. 


The Student Support Services Manager brings experience working with culturally diverse young people grounded in positive youth development. They are skilled at supporting young people to envision an inspiring future for themselves and to create actionable plans to achieve that vision. They are experienced and adept at building nurturing relationships with young people and can both challenge and support them in articulating and reaching their goals. They develop relationships with external partners and link young people to essential external support services and resources. While Managers lead various responsibilities of the Student Support Services Team, they also ensure that Future Chefs, organizationally, utilizes best practices in positive youth development and teen workforce development in creating and delivering curriculum, and in all its professional and personal development opportunities for students.   


For school year 2018-19, two managers will constitute the Student Support Services Team at Future Chefs who will provide support to up to 100 participating students. Final responsibilities of each the role will be determined after hire, in partnership with the Work-Based Learning Manager.


Responsibilities:

  • Work with and coach individual students to ensure programmatic outcomes attainment, providing wrap-around support services as needed (e.g., ensure all high school seniors create a post-secondary plan, support students in having successful internship and apprenticeship experiences, manage summer job program, etc.). 
  • Work in partnership with the Work-Based Learning Team to plan and review curriculum (e.g., determine final class agenda and learning targets, determine evaluation data to be collected, etc.).
  • Develop and cultivate partnerships with families, schools, and community organizations who can provide essential external support and resources.
  • Plan and conduct comprehensive recruitment efforts, including recruitment presentations and gaining referrals through key school and community partnerships.
  • Oversee selection process for enrollment into Future Chefs Programs, including screening family information and guidance counselor referral applications as necessary.
  • Support students in acquiring employment skills delivered through all programs by interacting with and coaching students during classroom sessions. (Note: Staff are required to work 1-2 nights per week during after school programming.)
  • Develop and deliver soft skills trainings and workshops, in partnership with the Work-Based Learning team.
  • Define, measure, and track student participation and skill development outcomes.
  • Meet at and drive to community sites with students; must have driver’s license, access to reliable vehicle, and the ability to drive the company van.
  • Work in partnership with other staff to ensure program events (e.g., NOW, Skill Drill, Small Plates, etc.) are executed within a positive youth development framework, prepare and support students for their participation in these events, and serve as the lead on one or more of these events as required and when appropriate.


Key Skills and Experiences

  • 3+ years of youth development experience, preferably in urban and low-income communities; competency in working with youth experiencing varying levels of trauma highly preferred.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with students, families, and partners.
  • Strong public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to think and act intentionally and strategically to support young people to make positive shifts in behavior.
  • Capacity for creative problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Highly organized and able to manage and complete projects and tasks with thoroughness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Self-motivation, initiative, sound judgment, and commitment to ongoing learning.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team.
  • Flexibility with work hours/schedule as needed for programming and participant needs, with ability to work in early evening hours and weekends as needed.
  • Commitment to addressing social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, FormAssembly, and data tracking tools preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; education or social work degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with the culinary industry, start-up, or social enterprise venture a plus.
