About the Teen Center:

Our Teen Center seeks to provide experiences for 9-12 grade students who develop their social-emotional and 21st-century skills to enhance youth’s academic engagement and post-secondary success. Teen Center programs motivate youth to explore different content areas and career interests, develop self-awareness and confidence, and set goals for their future.

LEAP’s Teen Center is open Monday through Thursday during after-school hours (2:00 PM-7:00 PM). The Teen Center aims to create a safe, welcoming space for high school students to be engaged in activities that interest them and complement their passions. The Teen Center supports youth from diverse populations and backgrounds through various enrichment programs that align with LEAP’s initiatives.

Job Overview & Responsibilities:

The Teen Center Associate will assist the Teen Center Coordinator in getting the space ready for the arrival and departure of approximately 25 students each day while ensuring that all COVID protocols are followed. This individual will also assist in the development and facilitation of inclusive programming opportunities within the Teen Center to support our students who use the space to get academic support and participate in the Teen Center’s many activities. The Teen Center Associate will be expected to spend between 4-8 hours a week at Salem High School (SHS) developing meaningful relationships with students and teachers with the intention of recruiting these students for the programs that occur in our Teen Center.

The individual will run and support daily in-person programming; this may include students meeting in person and virtually. Additionally, they will complete other tasks as assigned by the Teen Center Coordinator. The Teen Center staff will support, connect, and create culturally sensitive and relevant programs for the students.

The Teen Center Associate will work:

Monday-Thursday 12:00 PM-7:30 PM (7.5 hrs. a day); with Fridays off

Position responsibilities in addition to assisting the Teen Center Coordinator with day-to-day tasks needed to run the space:

  • Tutor students in any academic area (have a growth mindset and problem-solve together with students when not sure of material)
  • Facilitate daily engaging activities, including in-person team building activities while practicing social distancing
  • Co-lead The 84 (the84.org) weekly chapter group, ensuring weekly attendance is being kept, helping to support students complete a year-long project, finding guest speakers in the community for topics such as advocacy, public policy, and tobacco use
  • Aid with recruitment at Salem High School every month, as well as help to coordinate recruitment events. Recruitment includes setting up a table during lunches and speaking in classrooms directly with students.
  • Help coordinate student/program transportation needs by calling taxis at the end of programming in accordance with the transportation plan
  • Aid in consistent communication with teens and their parents, particularly within the Latino Spanish-speaking community
  • Provide support to the Teen Center students by developing meaningful relationships through creative and safe ways of interacting, including engaging in conversation, games, chaperoning field trips, tutoring/homework help, and regular check-ins
  • Assist with creating a welcoming, safe after-school environment, specifically by enforcing COVID protocols for all, helping with setting up materials and agendas, disinfecting the space, etc.
  • Help with administrative tasks such as filing, organizing virtual documents, and making phone calls to families to notify them about upcoming events
  • Cooking/preparing daily meals for the students

Qualifications

  • Able to speak and communicate in Spanish and English (required)
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in working with under-resourced youth
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and Google Suite
  • Experience in group facilitation and/or classroom management
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Strong organization and record-keeping skills
  • Exceptional ability to multitask, pay attention to details, and follow instructions
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and maintain progress on short and long-term goals

Compensation for this position ranges from $16.00/hour to $18.00/hour, depending on experience and education.

Benefits: As a full-time employee working more than 30 hours a week, you will qualify for the following (all paid time off will be pro-rated based on actual hours scheduled):

  • Accrued hours up to 3 weeks of vacation to start
  • Accrued hours up to an additional 19 days in sick and personal time (including optional holidays)
  • Eight (8) paid company holidays
  • Medical insurance (80% paid by the organization for single coverage, 75% for family)
  • Dental insurance (50% of premium paid)
  • Vision insurance (50% of premium paid)

COVID-19 considerations:

At the moment, when in the presence of students, all staff is required to wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. When students are not present, vaccinated staff do not need to wear a mask. This position requires in-person classes during the afternoon. Some remote work possible in the mornings.
