Job Description

The Institute is hiring a full-time Science and Policy Associate to contribute to our policy and research work. GSP is looking for a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented individual to work with our team of science and policy experts and play a key role in advancing our mission.

The Science and Policy Associate implements projects and activities including scientific research, writing, policy and project management work; drafts materials for publication; and helps maintain relationships with partner organizations. The Associate will have the opportunity to advance to a leadership position.

The Associate will work under supervision of the Institute leadership to do the following:

-       Science Communication – Track recent research related to PFAS, flame retardants, antimicrobials and other chemical classes of concern. Identify policy-relevant research findings and communicate them to stakeholders in business, government, academia and NGOs. This may involve writing newsletter articles, blogs, or website copy; making web-based or in-person presentations; and putting on workshops or symposia.

-       Policy Analysis – Track existing and proposed policies related to chemicals of concern at the federal, state, local, and international levels. Develop policy recommendations and comment on policy proposals.

-       Healthy Materials – Provide analysis and make recommendations for improvement of product certifications, restricted substances lists, and green procurement programs designed to reduce the use of harmful chemicals in consumer products and building materials. 

-       Research – Plan and carry out research projects related to harmful chemicals in consumer and building products and exposure to harmful chemicals in indoor environments. Coordinate with research collaborators. Write white papers and peer-reviewed journal articles.

-       Grants management – Contribute to writing project proposals and grant reports.

Position Expectations and Qualifications

REQUIRED

-       An advanced degree in the sciences, engineering, or public health

-       Experience or education related to environmental chemistry, environmental health science, green chemistry, toxicology, or a similar field.

-       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

-       Experience managing projects: efficient, organized, resourceful, and a proven track record of on-time delivery of high-quality work

-       Ability to think critically

-       Ability to take initiative, think creatively, and solve problems

-       Attention to detail, diligence, persistence, and flexibility

-       Excellent teamwork skills

-       Ability to research and synthesize information on scientific and policy topics

-       Mastery of Microsoft Office suite and Google Suite, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel and cloud-based equivalents

-       Passionate about our mission to protect health and the environment

DESIRABLE

-       Website and/or database maintenance and development skills

-       Experience working with industry, NGOs, and/or government

-       Experience researching and writing peer-reviewed papers
