Description

The Coordinator of Teacher Engagement and Professional Development will organize and facilitate professional development opportunities for teachers across Teaching for Change’s program and project areas, including but not limited to: anti-bias education, teaching about Central America, Teach the Beat: Go Go in the Classroom, the Tellin’ Stories Project, and Civil Rights Teaching. At Teaching for Change’s partner schools, the coordinator will work with teachers, administrators, parent coordinators, and family engagement committees providing training and coaching on the Tellin’ Stories approach.


This person coordinates D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice (more info here) - a project of Teaching for Change. The ideal candidate will have at least several years of teaching experience in public schools with knowledge of multicultural education and critical pedagogy, and demonstrable skills in curriculum design and workshop facilitation. Responsibilities will include the following:

D.C. Social Justice Teacher Network Building

  • Manage a local network of social justice teachers who are connected to Teaching for Change’s work:
  • Coordinate and facilitate professional development and workshops for teachers using Teaching for Change materials
  • Seek opportunities to spread TFC’s materials and resources among local teachers
  • Coordinate the Stories from Our Classroom writing series including logistics, instructor recruitment, and teacher recruitment
  • Provide targeted PD and coaching using Teaching for Change materials for preK-8 educators at Tellin’ Stories partner schools

Workshop Facilitation, Curriculum Development, and Special Projects

  • Coordinate and facilitate professional development and workshops for teachers using Teaching for Change materials
  • Develop project manuals for TFC’s content areas (anti-bias education, Central America, Civil Rights Teaching, and Teach the Beat) outlining the key resources and content for TFC staff to facilitate PD sessions
  • Support curriculum writers and special projects staff as assigned
  • Support curriculum development and coordinate lesson field-testing
  • Coordinate TFC-run teacher institutes and conferences, as appropriate
  • Support grant and contract administration by ensuring TFC is in compliance with expectations

Administrative Duties

  • Document TFC’s work with regular reports, photos, and evaluations
  • Prepare materials for program activities (fliers, mailings, etc.), prepare workshop supplies and hand-outs as needed
  • Participate in Teaching for Change all-staff meetings and other activities, as appropriate
  • Support fundraising efforts at Teaching for Change
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experiences & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with social justice education, particularly curriculum writing
  • Demonstrated experience with critical pedagogies/ teaching practice
  • Demonstrable skills in workshop development and facilitation; experience leading professional development a plus
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong writing and reporting skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Willingness to take initiative
  • Eager to learn and able to work both independently and as part of a team in a busy work setting
  • Passion for education and equity issues
  • Commitment to and belief in the mission of Teaching for Change.
