POSITION OVERVIEW

Frances Moore Lappé—author of Diet for a Small Planet and 19 other books, including Daring Democracy—is focusing on the growing Democracy Movement in the United States. We are seeking an associate to work closely with Frances in reaching and writing blogs, op-eds, speeches, and social media on America’s rising Democracy Movement as well as the threats to democracy. See her recent articles here. This person will serve as creative force with Lappé in ongoing development and promotion of the website: www.DemocracyMovement.US


Strong candidates would also have excellent skills and significant experience in related research, project management, and organizing tasks. The work will include concept development, research, editing, fact-checking, and general project management We are looking for a six-month commitment with possible continuation. The compensation will be based on experience. Boston-area candidates are preferred but all candidates welcome to apply.

 

TIME COMMITMENT

This is a temporary, part-time contract position. We ask for a commitment of approximately 20 hours per week largely during 9am to 5pm EST weekdays.  We are seeking to fill this position as soon as possible and it will continue through July 2021, with the possibility of extending.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·       Strong interest in the topics covered, along with strong analytical and writing strengths

·       Project management skills and experience, particularly in organizing and tracking details, e-files, and timelines.

·       A passion and strong background in political-democracy reforms is needed.

·       Excellent written communication skills are needed, including editing, research, and fact-checking.

·       Experience and skills in intern supervision are necessary, including delegation of online research projects and ensuring proper fact-checking procedures are followed, and ongoing support.

·       A passion for democratic social movements and the mission of the Small Planet Institute is required.

·       Comfortable with teamwork and individual work, and able participate in an open exchange of ideas with Frances.

·       Ability to excel with minimal direction and supervision, and also able to follow directions when given.


DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Collaborate with Frances with an open exchange of ideas as they work together.

·       Collaborate closely with Frances Moore Lappé in conceiving, researching, editing editorials, blogs, speeches, social media on America’s rising Democracy Movement as well as the threats to democracy.

·       Collaborate closely with Frances Moore Lappé to research many aspects of democracy in America, including obstacles, reforms, as well as international examples and comparisons.

·       Serve as creative force with Lappé in ongoing development and promotion of the website: www.DemocracyMovement.US.

12 Eliot Street, An in-person presence in our Cambridge office is preferred for at least some of your weekly hours because of the collaborative nature of the work. Small Planet Institute is conveniently located near the Harvard T and our office is informal and cheery., Cambridge, MA 02138
