Status:             Full-Time


Rate of Pay:  $52,000 to $55,000 a year, depending on experience, with full benefits (health/dental insurance, earned time off, a 401(k) plan, and access to an Employee Assistance Program).


BASIC FUNCTION: Working with the Senior Director of Advocacy, Executive Director, and the residential housing staff, the Director of Shelter Operations will oversee the operations of Sojourner House’s three (3) shelters for victims of abuse; manage the direct services residential staff members; ensure that agency-owned residential properties are properly maintained and repairs are made in a timely manner; oversee the agency’s residential hotline and on-call phone;  identify and implement new initiatives to benefit the clients of the agency’s residential housing program; provide data for grant reports and proposals; work with community partners to facilitate collaboration; and coordinate with the housing staff to ensure that advocates are working with clients to secure permanent housing.


PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

 

·        Provide supervision to residential staff for individual case management services to clients in Sojourner House’s shelter programs (including the Safe House, men’s services program, and shelter for victims of trafficking) and transitional housing program. Develop action plans with staff members so that clients are working towards goals related to obtaining education, employment, child care and permanent housing. Assist clients in obtaining appropriate substance abuse, mental health, and/or medical services as needed.

 

·        Review all shelter and transitional housing intakes, refer them to the Residential Team for review, and communicate regularly with the Senior Director of Advocacy about changes in the residential housing program population. Revise residential intake policies as necessary.

 

·        Monitor two agency-owned properties and ensure that facilities are appropriately maintained and repairs are scheduled in a timely manner.


·        Develop programming for the shelters and transitional housing program, and work with residential staff to ensure that the programming being offered is reflective of the clients’ current needs. The Director will regularly assess the needs of Sojourner House’s residential housing clients.

 

·        Serve as a resource for all residential housing staff for case management and advocacy to benefit residential clients. The Director will also oversee the volunteers/inters who work with the residential program.

 

·        Become a certified Qualified Test Counselor and be eligible to administer HIV tests to clients and, where appropriate, community members.

 

·        Work with Rhode Island social service provider to best serve the needs of residential housing clients. Maintain regular contact with key contacts from partner organizations and represent Sojourner House at community meetings and forums.

 

·        Stay abreast of RI community housing issues by building and maintaining relationships with housing and social service agencies in northern Rhode Island, Providence, and throughout the state. 

 

·        Serve as the primary on-call contact for the shelter and transitional housing programs. Respond to emergencies as they arise and/or delegate staff to respond to emergencies that may occur during off-hours.

 

·        Working with the Youth Advocate, oversee the coordination of children’s services and make referrals as necessary for families with minor children. This may include but is not limited to: enrollment in the local school system, art expressive therapy groups, tutoring sessions, play groups, field trips, after school, recreational and enrichment activities, child care and mental health programs.

 

·        Monitor and implement residential housing policies and ensure that residents follow these rules and procedures by creating an environment of trust and community. Make recommendations for policy changes or modifications when appropriate.

 

·        Complete data entry and submit necessary reports for grant compliance.

 

·        Support Sojourner House’s philosophy of client empowerment and respect for individual choices.

 

·        Perform other duties as requested by Sojourner House management.

 

 

EDUCATION:           Bachelor’s Degree required


EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL SKILLS:       

 

  • A minimum of five to eight years experience in human or social services


  • Familiarity with domestic violence and/or sexual assault


  • Previous experience providing supervision to staff members


  • Professional experience managing a shelter or residential program


  • Must be organized and demonstrate superior leadership skills


  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written


  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, and general Internet skills)


  • Familiarity working with individuals of different cultures and backgrounds


  • Experience developing and delivering community presentations


  • A demonstrated familiarity with LGBTQ, HIV/AIDS, mental health, and/or substance abuse populations


  • Comfort working individually and in teams


  • Possess innovative thinking to approaching issues of poverty, domestic violence, and service delivery


  • Familiarity with social service services in Rhode Island


  • Ability to work an irregular work schedule (subject to change), including some 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. shifts during the week and occasional work on the weekends.
