Organization: Partners for Women and Justice empowers low-income victims and survivors of domestic violence to build safe and secure futures for themselves and their children by providing equal access to justice. We offer quality legal assistance in domestic violence and family law matters.

 

Position: The Partner in Hope Fellowship is a fully funded 2-year fellowship, beginning in September 2018, for an exceptional, enthusiastic and caring recent law school graduate or recent law clerk to help victims of domestic violence escape abuse by assisting them in obtaining restraining orders, financial support and safe custody and safe visitation arrangements for their children. 

 

The Partner in Hope Fellow will receive both formal and informal training in the following areas: client interaction, preparation of court documents, domestic violence and family law, litigation skills, and court procedure.  This is an extraordinary opportunity to gain substantive hands-on litigation experience in a supportive and collaborative environment.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct legal representation to clients in domestic violence and related proceedings, including final restraining orders, custody, visitation and child support matters
  • Provide advice and counsel to victims of domestic violence who represent themselves
  • Review cases to determine the level of services to be provided
  • Stay abreast of developments in the law of domestic violence and family law
  • Assist with Partners’ advocacy efforts to address systemic issues affecting the client population, including through attendance at DV Working Group meetings and analyzing proposed legislation
  • Conduct presentations and participate in trainings to promote the mission of the organization; be available as needed to talk to funders and donors; some evening meetings necessary
  • Keep client information current in database

 

Qualifications:

  • Admission to practice law, and in good standing, in New Jersey
  • Clerkship experience and interest in domestic violence and family law is preferred
  • Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Willingness to commute regularly to our office in Montclair and courthouses in Essex, Union, Middlesex, Hudson and Passaic Counties
  • Proficient in use of computer and software applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to speak Spanish or a second language is a plus
