Status: Full Time (preferred)

Location: Victim Rights Law Center's Portland, Oregon, or Massachusetts offices (remote work possible; VRLC staff are currently all remote due to the pandemic)

Organization: The Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC) is a nonprofit law center that provides free legal services to sexual assault survivors in Massachusetts and Oregon, and also national training, mentoring, resources, and other support for lawyers, advocates, and other victim service providers on the legal and privacy needs of survivors of gender-based violence. The VRLC’s mission is to provide legal representation to victims of rape and sexual assault to help rebuild their lives, and to promote a national movement committed to seeking justice for every rape and sexual assault victim. A successful candidate will enjoy creating and delivering in-person and online legal trainings, developing curricula, developing innovative approaches to adult learning, conducting legal research, and building relationships, engaging in problem solving and working collaboratively with attorneys and advocates across the country. They will be committed to serving marginalized and underserved populations and passionate about ending sexual violence.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support to lawyers in the states, tribes and territories who receive (or are eligible for) funding from the U.S. DOJ’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) to represent sexual assault survivors on their civil legal and criminal justice advocacy needs
  • Consult with and provide information and support to legal advocates serving survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking
  • Create, update, and deliver survivor-centered, culturally responsive, remote and in-person trainings to OVW-funded attorneys and (non-attorney) legal advocates
  • Develop, draft, edit, and/or review tools and resources that help attorneys and legal advocates meet survivors’ legal needs
  • Help develop and implement a communication and outreach plan promoting VRLC’s training and technical assistance services to OVW grantees
  • Track and maintain data related to the delivery of training and technical assistance and grant reporting
  • Ensure timely completion of project deliverables
  • Other duties as assigned

Note: This position does not include client representation.

Required Qualifications:

  • J.D.
  • At least 2 years of experience providing legal representation to survivors of gender-based violence or equivalent expertise
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience designing, creating and delivering in-person and remote (online) presentations, trainings, and workshops and companion materials
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and shifting demands and still meet project deadlines
  • Problem-solving skills and creative approaches to using the law to meet survivors’ needs
