Description

The National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) is currently under construction in Columbus, Ohio, representing a national initiative of profound importance for our nation’s 20+ million living veterans. There is no single monument or museum dedicated to the veteran’s experience in the US today. With 30,000 square feet available for exhibit space, this new institution will celebrate the service and honor the sacrifice of veterans throughout history. Envisioned by the late Senator John Glenn (1921-2016), Colonel, USMC (Retired), as a gathering place for veterans across the country, the museum is scheduled to open to the public in fall 2018. NVMM will present the veteran experience through the lens of personal stories and life-changing experiences from which visitors will be inspired to learn more about our country’s history and actively engage in their own communities as informed citizens.


The NVMM is recruiting for an experienced Volunteer Coordinator to set up and manage its volunteer program. The position will report to the Visitor Services Manager within the Visitor Experience division of the Museum. This position will be responsible for all aspects of the NVMM’s volunteer program, both public-facing and back-of-house functions of the Memorial and Museum.


 

MAJOR DUTIES


Planning and Assessment


Determines the volunteer staffing needs of all areas across the NVMM, meets with NVMM departments seeking volunteer support to determine staffing needs and assess skill requirement. Works with Visitor Services Manager to develop an annual volunteer recruitment and retention plan. Advises supervisors of volunteers on various procedural and policy issues. Develops volunteer job descriptions. Establishes, collects, evaluates, and reports on a wide-range of metrics, including rates of volunteer placement, attrition, retention, satisfaction and advancement across the NVMM. Identifies factors that influence recruitment and retention, positively or negatively, and reports factors that will increase volunteer retention. 


Recruitment


Identifies creative methods to attract volunteer talent and applicants, including but not limited to: hosting and attending recruiting events and career fairs, placing opportunity advertisements; partnering with affinity groups, and posting announcements through newsgroups, list serves and other Internet resources. Builds networks, including hiring managers, colleges and universities, social and professional networking sites, and other online sites, in order to find, identify, and source candidates, and establish a working relationships. Develops a pool of qualified candidates in advance of the need to staff, ensuring that the NVMM has suitable access to talent to ensure mission success. Determines applicant requirements by studying job descriptions and job qualifications; determines applicant qualifications by interviewing applicants, analyzing responses, verifying references, comparing skills and ability to job requirements, and matches volunteers with service opportunities. Maintains the status of volunteer candidates in the volunteer tracking database, as well as the current position description library and external database listings. Onboards and trains volunteers.


Retention


Works with managers to identify what skills or attributes retainable volunteers possess in order to hire and retain future volunteers. Provides professional consult to volunteer supervisors. Provides guidance to volunteers in mapping how they can attain their volunteer service goals with the NVMM. Plans and provides workshops, tours, and outings as well as informal education sessions, aimed at enriching volunteers’ understanding and literacy of the NVMM. Develops and maintains a pan-NVMM Volunteer of the Year award. Orchestrates the NVMM’s annual volunteer appreciation and acknowledgement efforts. 


Additional Duties


Performs studies, special projects and additional representational assignments as directed by the supervisor. May work one or more holidays a year.


Qualifications


Qualifications

Master’s degree in arts administration

Or

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or AND have relevant and related experience demonstrating EACH of the four competencies and specialized experience below:

AND


Have one year of experience specialized experience which provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include experience Spearheads the development of NVMM initial policies and processes associated with hiring, awarding, and retaining volunteer employees in order to explain these policies and processes to managers and volunteers (including prospective volunteers); draft recurring hiring and retention plans; meet with prospective volunteers and managers; recruit, screen, and place volunteers; and resolve procedural or process issues. 


Knowledge of and skill in the use of a variety of database systems and reference sources in order to obtain information needed to respond to inquiries and monitor and track the recruitment and placement of volunteers.


Customer service and interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with diverse populations and work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve Visitor Experience and the NVMM’s goals. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in order to advise management and prepare plans, reports, and other common materials.


Supervisory Controls


The Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Visitor Experience Manager who makes assignments in terms of issues/problems to be resolved, potential problem areas, priorities, and deadlines. The coordinator independently plans and carries out the work, coordinates with management and customers as appropriate, and resolves standard problems, referring unusual or complex issues to the supervisor or more senior staffer. The supervisor reviews the work for conformance with assignment requirements, technical adequacy, and policy compliance. 


Scope and Effect


The purposes of the work are to provide operational and limited advisory support in the areas of hiring and retaining volunteers for the NVMM, and prepare hiring and retention plans. The work ensures that there are sufficient numbers and quality of volunteers to fulfill NVMM mission.



Physical Demands


The work is primarily sedentary with some travel between offices and around the NVMM building and campus, as well as bending, lifting and stooping to retrieve files or records and carrying of files and folders. No special physical abilities are needed to perform the work.
