Position Title: Director of Economic Justice Campaigns

Position Location: CPD/A has offices in NYC and DC, but for this role, we will consider candidates who live outside our office areas but within the US.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a Director of Economic Justice Campaigns.

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

CPD seeks an experienced campaigner to join as the Director of Economic Justice Campaigns. The Director will report to one of our Interim Campaign Managers (eventually to the Chief of Campaigns) and supervise the team who drives our issue campaigns on worker justice, wall street, and federal reserve (FedUp) campaigns. The Director will work closely with other CPD teams to develop a robust research agenda, build lasting infrastructure, explore emerging issues, test new organizing strategies, and identify opportunities for campaign collaboration. The Director will also lead fundraising and subgranting work, with support from our Development team and other members of the Economic Justice team, while mentoring members of the team to grow their fundraising skills.

We are seeking a candidate that can help dramatically scale the impact of our already high-impact Economic Justice team. An ideal candidate will bring proven campaigning skills, especially in coordinating national campaigns that build power and win change through powerful narrative and strategic communications, inventive actions, and strong coalitions. Issue expertise is highly welcome, but campaigners whose campaign experience is in areas other than economic justice are encouraged to apply. The leading candidate will be committed to fostering growth and increasing responsibility of supervisees. We estimate that candidates will have about 15 years of demonstrated experience in a worker or grassroots community organizing context, including experience running and winning complex, multi-jurisdictional issue or organizing campaigns, and supervising large teams. While we estimate 15 years of experience for this role, our focus will be on demonstrated experience and success, not years.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with, mentor, and supervise the issue team leads to envision, run, and win ambitious campaigns that integrate demands for worker justice, an accountable Federal Reserve and reining in Wall Street’s power.
  • Implement strong campaign planning practices that reflect CPD’s methodology and theory of change, and which support building the base, strength, and infrastructure of our state-based partners.
  • Drive strategic thinking about CPD’s North Star for economic justice with other senior staff from CPD’s core teams and departments.
  • Ensure that racial and gender justice are core priorities within the work, and that proposed campaign goals and methodologies reflect these priorities.
  • Support CPD staff in experimenting with emerging campaigning and organizing approaches (digital, peer-to-peer organizing, etc.).
  • Cultivate key funder relationships and drive fundraising activities to support Economic Justice work, as well as other CPD priorities.
  • Represent CPD in the national landscape and build and maintain effective relationships with a range of allies by attending national coalition tables, participating in media appearances, and other public events.
  • Manage subgranting and processes for engaging affiliates and state partners in developing economic justice campaign strategies, long-term vision for economic justice, and shared learnings.
  • Provide consistent and effective supervision that fosters growth and accountability, and ensure that senior team members are skillfully supervising their direct reports.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a worker or grassroots community organizing context, including experience running and winning complex, multi-jurisdictional issue or organizing campaigns;
  • Significant experience managing large teams and complex projects or initiatives;
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, and a sophisticated analysis of racial justice as an imperative for a successful economic justice agenda;
  • A commitment to building people’s institutions as a core element of building power;
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment with staff from diverse backgrounds  who work in an array of issue areas;
  • Ability to  problem-solve and support a team in overcoming challenges;
  • An orientation towards the big picture even as you build and drive a high-capacity, effective team to move the Economic Justice body of work;
  • Ability to travel occasionally;
  • Spanish language ability preferred, but not required;
  • Significant foundation, individual donor, and other fundraising experience preferred, but not required;
  • Experience moving a c4 political program preferred, but not required.
