About the Position: 

Explore Schools is seeking a tactical and visionary leader to serve as Director of Operations and Technology for the entire network. Reporting to the Managing Director of Operations, the Director of Operations and Technology is responsible for overseeing all reporting and compliance needs, leading school operational support, and technology vendor management. The Director of Operations and Technology will work out of our Brooklyn central office with regular travel to our school sites. 

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 


  • Supervise, support and evaluate members of the network operations team (Operations & Technology Managers and Data & Operations Associate), including professional development planning
  • Lead the support of school-based operations teams through weekly guidance, professional development, and process creation and oversight
  • Work with ESI’s MDO to create and continuously improve a comprehensive strategy for school based operations and logistics that supports the mission of school based operations: to proactively anticipate and meet the needs of teachers and academic leadership
  • Develop, maintain, and disseminate role-specific training for all staff members on utilizing the student information system; build out modules like the family/ guardian portal as dictated by network priorities 

Reporting and Compliance 

  • Oversee timely and successful completion of mandated reports to internal stakeholders (e.g. Board Members, Organization Leaders) and external stakeholders (e.g. NYC DOE, NYSED, SUNY)
  • Responsible for the accuracy of all student demographics across internal and city-wide student information systems
  • Coordinate regular checks of student data and supervise the accurate and timely completion of these checks by school-based owners
  • Monitor weekly charter school communication from the NYC DOE and relay any relevant tasks or updates to school- or network-based stakeholders, while providing additional support as needed
  • Create and oversee process for tracking discipline data through student information system and train school-based staff members to effectively use tracking process; support school-based staff members in leveraging the tracking process for data capture and analysis 

Student Assessments and Enrollment 

  • Oversee test administration and analysis
  • Create and manage report card and progress report processes
  • Ensure that all schools have healthy enrollments based on budgetary demands, while overseeing the paper- and systems-based process for formal student enrollment
  • Manage all waitlist and lottery management processes and keep them in compliance with charter authorizer, city, and state regulations/ laws
  • Oversee the technical school lottery process by providing support for student recruitment efforts, systems for verifying applicant information/ priorities, and running live public lotteries each Spring 

Technology and Vendor Management 

  • Oversee 3rd-party technology support vendor’s provision of technology support to all school sites, staff members, and network office
  • Manage educational and organizational technology strategy, technology infrastructure of school sites and network office, annual budgets, and E-Rate process and funding
  • Own the relationship with educational technology vendors (e.g. Swivl, Hapara, Blackhawk) and manage all development and technical support initiatives/ requests
  • Own the relationship with the student information system vendor and manage all development and technical support initiatives/ requests 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Support schools for all capital improvements by overseeing the planning process, application submissions, and follow-up with city constituencies (e.g. DSF, Space Planning)
  • Support schools in the collection, submission, and tracking of student meal forms to ensure school FRPL percentages are accurate and up-to-date 


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 4 years of related business/operations experience
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated success managing a small team or multiple large projects
  • Strong project management skills, ability to handle multiple priorities, and must be detail-oriented
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
