The Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights (CLCCR) seeks a Director of Finance and Operations to lead the financial and operational aspects of the organization. As we approach our 50th Anniversary in 2019, this person will play a crucial role in creating a business model that aligns with our mission and strategic plan, and ensures a robust and sustainable financial future for CLCCR. This will include examining current financial and operational systems and practices, and recommending changes to improve financial efficiency and internal operations. This position will report to the Executive Director and serve on the management team. He or she will bring a passion for social justice as well as a vital business perspective to the challenges and opportunities we face in Chicago’s highly competitive nonprofit marketplace.


Founded by prominent Chicago lawyers and law firms in 1969, CLCCR is Chicago’s hometown, nonprofit civil rights legal organization. We are civil rights lawyers and advocates working to secure racial equity and economic opportunity for all. Currently, our board and staff are engaged in a strategic planning process designed to sharpen our vision and purpose, and create organizational alignment around strategic goals.

CLCCR has a 22-member staff team, a 22-member board of directors, and an annual operating budget of approximately $2.1 M. We provide legal support through partnerships with the private bar and collaborate with grassroots organizations and other advocacy groups to implement community-based reforms. Our advocacy program includes legal representation of individuals, as well as impact litigation and policy advocacy to tackle the systems that perpetuate racial and economic disparities in education, housing, voting, public safety, and community economic development.

Principal Responsibilities:   

·        Manage the full range of finance-related operations, including: preparing the annual organizational budget, project budgets, grant budgets, financial reports to funders, and monthly financial statements; overseeing the audit process; and monitoring cash flow.

·        Lead all aspects of risk management, compliance, internal controls, and relationships with banking institutions and investment firms.

·        Institute rigorous best practice processes in budgeting and financial planning and analysis, cost management, program improvement, and metrics.

·        Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and Development Director to align fundraising strategies with organizational financial needs, to set goals and develop financial forecasts at the organizational and project levels, and to streamline expenses.

·        Support the board, particularly the treasurer and finance committee, in the board’s financial oversight of the organization.

·        Optimize technology across the organization to enhance and streamline workflow, and to identify technology solutions to improve finance and accounting functions.

·        Oversee human capital management, including personnel policies, employee benefits, hiring and retention, and performance review processes.


•         Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and economic opportunity for all

•         College degree in accounting, finance or a related field

•         Leadership style that is strategic, visionary, and creative; both detail oriented and big picture

•         At least five years of experience in accounting, finance, and operations, preferably nonprofit experience

•         Proven excellence in budgeting, strategic forecasting and planning, accounting, financial reporting,

compliance, and risk management

•         Skilled at presenting financial information in a clear fashion to a variety of audiences with varying levels of

financial expertise

•         Knowledgeable about nonprofit IT needs and solutions

•         Experience with human resources best practices

•         Excellent written and oral communication

•         Flexibility and ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects

Ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team

•         Ability to use considerable judgment, initiative and independence, and maintain confidentiality
