PROGRAM SUMMARY

Roots for Peace (R4P), historically a leadership development and urban farming program is centering its youth organizing work in 2021 and beyond. Having successfully developed a powerful Food Growers Network and the South LA Community Farm, R4P is transitioning this work to the community in 2022. The R4P youth program organizes immigrant Latinx youth to address health and economic inequities in Los Angeles. Through community organizing and coalition building with leadership development at the center, R4P will support youth to create structural changes necessary to divest from systems of punishment and invest in systems of community care.

 

SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Program Director is responsible for the overall function and implementation of the Roots for Peace: Healthy Communities program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in Los Angeles. The director provides strategic and creative leadership, planning, supervision, documentation and evaluation of all activities related to the program in collaboration with the Program Coordinator and reporting to the Associate Regional Director.

 

The Program Director will work closely with the Roots for Peace Team to grow our Youth Led organizing work. Building off our food and environmental justice efforts and youth leadership development, a core role of the Program Director, as the Lead Organizer, will be to build Youth-led organizing that builds power and wins change in the areas of economic, environmental and racial injustice.

 

ESSENTIAL DIRECTOR FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The key responsibilities of the Program Director include the following:

 

OVERSEE PROGRAM DIRECTION

1. Provide strategic and creative leadership to the AFSC Los Angeles program.

2. Lead program planning, strategies, monitoring, documentation, and reporting, for implementation of the program’s strategic plan.

3. Identify, develop, and/or maintain relationships with key partners

4. Supervise staff to ensure that the program is of high quality and effectiveness, and is focused on the mission, goals and objectives of the AFSC.

5. Carry out administrative tasks and duties related to the position including program reporting, program-based budgeting, and submission of administrative paperwork.

6. Work with AFSC support staff (Communications, IT, and Development departments) as necessary.

7. Delegate administrative and program responsibilities to other staff as appropriate.

8. Collaborate with AFSC development unit to write and submit grants.

 

LEAD YOUTH ORGANIZING:

1. In collaboration with Roots for Peace team, organize youth of color at the local level to engage in new and existing organizing campaigns to change public policy.

2. Train youth leaders in the skills and practices of community organizing using an anti-oppression framework.

3. Facilitate Youth Leadership development trainings that center on youth wellness and trauma healing.

4. Expand the base of young people engaged with Roots for Peace in South Los Angeles and across the city.

5. Prepare and facilitate workshops, collaborate in curriculum development, and anchor community organizing events and actions with youth in leadership.

6. Maintain communication with campaign and coalition partners

7. Work closely with the Healing Justice and/or Economic Justice Thematic Networks as part of AFSC-related collaborative projects and campaigns.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree and/or training in a related area.

 

DIRECTOR AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE:

1. At least two years of experience in the areas of budgeting, fundraising, and program administration.

2. Experience in supervising staff.

3. Background in developing a program plan or strategic plan with a team.

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly encouraged.

 

ORGANIZER EXPERIENCE:

1. Demonstrated ability to design and implement youth-led organizing/advocacy and leadership development efforts in the areas of economic, racial and social justice.

2. Demonstrated experience in building partnerships and working collaboratively with schools, after school programs, parents, community groups, non-profit organizations and decision-makers.

3. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, plan and implement tasks with minimum supervision, and respond quickly and effectively to unplanned activities, while also meeting deadlines.

4. Knowledge and experience with youth issues affecting diverse communities in Los Angeles.

5. Proficient in Microsoft Office and various social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

6. Available to work evenings and weekends.

 

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.

2. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

3. Ability to connect with diverse audiences and to influence situations using tact and diplomacy.

4. Willingness to work with a committee-led process using consensus decision-making.

5. Ability to persuade and motivate others and to gain the respect and attention of AFSC staff members and volunteers.

6. Ability to work well under pressure and adapt easily to changing situations and priorities.

7. Proven ability to reach out collaboratively to individuals, groups and organizations.

8. Strong interpersonal skills with knowledge of and experience in using consultative, decision-making processes.

9. Ability to commute to site location and Downtown Los Angeles office.

10. Initiative, creativity, drive, energy and a sense of humor.

COMPENSATION: Salary $59,892 with minimal flexibility based on experience– Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
