The Promise of Justice Initiative (PJI) is a non-profit law office and civil rights nonprofit based in New Orleans, Louisiana. PJI’s projects include focus on ending the death penalty, fixing inhumane conditions of confinement, exposing prosecutorial and judicial misconduct, eliminating poor representation of criminal defendants, and ending racial discrimination in the criminal justice system.

PJI is seeking a full-time Organizer/Records Specialist to play an integral role in assisting with PJI’s new Unanimous Jury Project. This position combines community organizing with court records investigation and management, and will be at the forefront of working to advocate for people serving sentences after being convicted by non-unanimous juries.

The Organizer/Records Specialist will organize to educate and empower community members around the goals of the Unanimous Jury Project; advance the priorities and effectiveness of those working on, or volunteering for, the Unanimous Jury Project; and organize events and coalition building opportunities. The position can also involve meeting with people incarcerated in Louisiana’s prisons, working with families, and attending the occasional regional meeting.

The Organizer/Records Specialist will also work with extensive historical court records to investigate the criminal proceedings that occurred in people’s cases, to analyze and synthesize vital information, and to organize and store the records in a manner that can be later accessed easily.

The ideal candidate will be resourceful, organized, creative, resilient and driven. The candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, initiative, tact and discretion. To be successful at this position, a person should have the ability to accurately analyze and evaluate facts obtained through court records and orally from people who are incarcerated, clerks, lawyers, or others involved in the criminal justice system. The ability to work on cases in a team-oriented environment is key. The position will require some work outside of business hours and some weekends and will require travel within the state.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Computer literacy, advanced word-processing skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with teams
  • Willingness to work long hours when necessary
  • Commitment to seeking justice for all people
