About All Saints Literacy Center

All Saints Literacy Center enables adult learners to meet the challenges of today by improving their reading, writing, math and English speaking skills. Qualified tutors provide an individualized learning plan tailored to the goals and objectives of the learner in a welcoming environment. 

Position Summary 

We are looking for an ESL/ELL Instructor to join our team on-site and part-time. We are located in southwest Detroit near I-96 and Vernor.The position will be responsible for planning and implementing lessons for English Language Learning programming. Duties include delivering group instruction, providing individualized support to tutors and learners, and promoting participant goal accomplishments.

This is a grant-funded hourly position from July 1,  2024 to June 30, 2025, with the possibility of an extension. The schedule for this position is flexible (16 hours per week). There is an additional opportunity to teach digital literacy on-site for 16 hours per week.

Job Qualifications:

  • Current Michigan teaching certificate mandatory
  • ESL/ELA experience and endorsement preferred
  • Must keep accurate records      

Responsibilities:       

  • Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English.
  • Prepare and instruct scheduled classes. Assist in offering additional support to tutors and learners.
  • Instruction must be consistent and coordinated with the instructional program so that adult learners meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in state-funded and other grant requirements.
  • Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English language learners to meaningfully access instructional programming. 
  • Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating learner progress in meeting academic targets and progress in language acquisition.  
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress and evidence of growth and progress.
  • Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
  • Assess students' readiness to take the United States Citizenship exam.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year.
  • Maintain attendance log.
  • Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed.
  • Create projects designed to enhance lessons.
  • Read and stay abreast of current topics in adult education.
  • Create lesson plans.
  • Utilize various curriculum resources.
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.
  • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
  • Develop incentives to keep participants in class.
  • Develop professional relationships with other agencies and programs.
  • Work with program administration to ensure initiatives are being met.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance.
  • Create and deliver volunteer tutor-training and other educational workshops 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Language Acquisition, Education, Adult Education, Reading, or in a related field
  • Instructional proficiency in the areas of mathematics, reading and writing with ESL teaching experience recommended
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use techniques for both individualized and group instruction
  • Experience working with adult learners and knowledge of adult learning
  • Experience in teaching multicultural adult populations
  • Comfort level with technology and knowledge of how to use variety of educational tools when teaching online.

Salary

$23 per hour
