About Zero Waste Schools

Since 2010, GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Schools Program (ZWS) has developed model recycling programs and designed unique and engaging educational materials for use at public schools throughout NYC. Working in partnership with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) Office of Sustainability, and the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability, ZWS provides on-the-ground support to NYC public schools receiving Organics Collection services from DSNY.

Our programing has been instrumental in increasing recycling and organics collection rates in the largest school system in the United States and introducing the next generation of New Yorkers to the importance and the practices of waste reduction and recycling. We make a sustained investment to each school we partner with: site visits, remote visits, training for teachers, student education, special events, action plans, and technical support all ensure schools are not only sorting recyclables, trash and organics correctly, but students and staff are aware of the larger issues surrounding waste and taking actions to reduce waste.
