Position Description

Position Profile

The Managing Director, Learning, Measurement, and Evaluation (“MD”), reports to the Chief Investment and Impact Officer (CIIO) and works closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO), fund leads, and senior leadership. The MD, will be responsible for designing, developing, and stewarding strategies and systems that integrate active and engaged learning throughout Blue Meridian. This individual will also be responsible for ensuring integration of evidence-based decision making and evidence-building strategies across Blue Meridian leveraging the Evaluation Advisory Committee and other engaged stakeholders and leaders. Through the coordination and curation of institutional knowledge, and by facilitating learning across Blue Meridian, as well as evaluation framework for measuring impact, the MD, will foster an environment that helps Blue Meridian fully realize its goal of being a learning organization and achieve impact through its performance-based investments.

Primary Responsibilities[1]

The Managing Director responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Lead Learning, Measurement, and Evaluation Strategy

  • Serve as the key architect for Blue Meridian learning and evaluation strategy, including driving the design, implementation, and stewardship of a comprehensive, integrated cross-portfolio approach to learning and continuous improvement.
  • Work with the CIIO, COO, fund leads, and senior leadership to further define what learning and evaluation means for Blue Meridian and create a cohesive and comprehensive plan to make learning an active, engaging, and integrated part of the work.
  • Manage the growth and future direction of Blue Meridian Evaluation Advisory Committee (the “EAC”) comprised of field leaders charged with strengthening evaluation at Blue Meridian through strategic advice, vetting, and strengthening research and evaluation work of current and potential Blue Meridian investees, offering recommendations, referrals, and critical connections for evaluation efforts undertaken by Blue Meridian and its investees.
  • Curate a broad set of platforms and opportunities to ensure that Blue Meridian staff, investees, and the broader community are using new and existing information dynamically to make better decisions, respectfully challenge and vet each other’s ideas, and take calculated risks in the pursuit of greater impact.
  • Blue Meridian has an existing evidence framework that requires further refinement and alignment that builds upon current learning efforts, combining and coordinating existing learning assets and activities with new programs to foster an integrated approach. Support Portfolio teams in ensuring information is a living part of the strategic investment, research, and evaluation process and that learning is practiced in a dynamic way internally and among investees.
  • Facilitate “outside-in” learning to ensure that new ideas and trends are widely disseminated and adopted across Blue Meridian funds, including emerging and evolving initiatives and Blue Meridian’s Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) goals.
  • Leverage and support Blue Meridian investees around learning, measurement, and evaluation, including tools and resources that clearly articulate impact.

Lead Execution, Operations, and Integration of Learning, Measurement, and Evaluation Across Blue Meridian

  • Ensure effective program design, measurement, and evaluation that demonstrates contribution to impact while aligning with the mission and guiding principles of Blue Meridian.
  • In partnership with the CIIO, COO, fund leads, and senior leadership identify mechanisms to facilitate the flow of knowledge and ideas throughout Blue Meridian, including championing cross-program collaboration, knowledge sharing, and coordinated efforts to demonstrate value add to investees and impact.
  • Oversee learning and evaluation internal practice that advises and assists in the design, implementation, and use of monitoring and evaluation systems across portfolios, including mechanisms for rapid feedback and learning within and across portfolios.
  • Coordinate across Blue Meridian to develop and implement a cohesive learning, measurement, and evaluation vision.

Qualifications

  • Aligned with Blue Meridian’s mission and core values.
  • At least 20 years of professional/advanced academic experience in learning, research, evaluation, and evidence-based practice, ideally in for-profit, government, or nonprofit environments. A Bachelor’s degree is required. Completion of an advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MA, MPH, Ph.D., or relevant degree related to research and evaluation) is helpful.
  • Perspective from direct experience living or working in communities with significant low income or otherwise disenfranchised peoples desirable.
  • Experience working with complex, high-growth organizations and comfortable engaging with and presenting at senior levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership in supporting organizational change and development through information sharing and knowledge acquisition. An ability to bring imagination, innovation, and a practitioner-centered approach to systems of learning, and proven capacity to create and respond to novel and innovative approaches to addressing an issue. Experience in supporting change to organizational systems and culture.
  • Ability to synthesize complex, interrelated material and focus quickly on the essence of an issue while maintaining clarity around the big picture, with a particular capability of turning complex ideas into simple and accessible information.
  • Expertise in turning research and evaluation into relevant, dynamic learning opportunities with the ability to drive multilayered conversations to consensus, including conceptualize the implications of quantitative and qualitative data, sometimes amid disparate and even contradictory information.
  • Impeccable writing, presentation and oral communication skills, and the ability to synthesize and translate complicated materials into clear and simple language. This includes the translation of academic research into practical, applicable knowledge and tactics.
  • Sound judgment, keen analytical and business strategy skills, and the ability to think critically, make decisions, and justify recommendations and results based on data and analysis.
  • Strong project, time, and people management skills, including demonstrated ability to think independently and with limited supervision, flexibility, and tolerance of ambiguity are pre-requisites.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with a professional and genial demeanor, and the ability to work with and lead people with different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Highly energetic, self-motivated, and entrepreneurial, able to balance a meticulous and highly rigorous professional approach with a flexible and empathetic responsiveness to the needs of others. While skilled at thinking and working independently and advocating own point of view, respects and solicits the contributions of others.
  • Strong computer skills with extensive knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the ability to master new software quickly. Experience with customer relationship management system (CRM) highly desirable.
  • Willing to travel as needed (once safe to do so).
