The Community Soup Kitchen (CSK) has been a cornerstone of New Haven’s emergency food system for over 40 years. Housed at its close partner Christ Church in the heart of downtown New Haven, CSK provides a hot, nutritious mid-day meal to all who come – no requirements – during the week (except Wednesday) and breakfast on Saturdays. It also provides outreach meals at neighboring churches and ancillary services such as medical screenings, social services, and veteran services in partnership with local agencies. The organization is known as a stable organization with high-functioning operations and a legion of committed volunteers who help with a wide range of tasks.

Position Start Date and Time Commitment:

The long-term Executive Director is retiring at the end of December. It is our expectation that the Interim ED position begins the last week of December 2020 to permit on-site job orientation with the departing Executive Director. Duties commence January 1, 2021 and continue for a term of 4 to 6 months until a permanent ED is hired. We expect the Interim ED to be onsite when the Community Soup Kitchen is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 7:30 AM until mid-afternoon on weekdays, and on Saturday until late morning.


Position Responsibilities:  Responsible for organizing and managing the necessary staffing and resources to fulfill the mission of CSK to provide free, nutritious cooked meals at lunchtime four days a week, and breakfast one day a week. The Interim Executive Director will supervise three part-time employees: a chef, a dining room/operations manager, and an administrative assistant; and will also supervise volunteers in the preparation of food, kitchen maintenance, food delivery, and general maintenance. Operations will continue to be conducted in compliance with all State and City Covid-19 regulations.

With staff, develop meal plans and place food orders; manage food inventory; determine food and supplies necessary for daily meals; pick up and deliver donated and purchased food using CSK’s van; and work with the Board Treasurer in review and payment of all bills. The Interim ED will report to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair, attend monthly Board meetings (currently virtual), and prepare reports and updates for the Board.

Qualifications: The Interim ED must be committed to CSK’s mission; be flexible and focused; be hands-on in operations; be experienced in managing similar operations, including necessary kitchen management experience; be in good health capable of physical duties; and possess a valid driver’s license and current Safe Food Certificate. A background check and drug test are required.

This is a salaried position with a pay scale commensurate with experience, to be agreed upon. The position of Interim ED should not be regarded as a means to becoming the permanent Executive Director.
