Through our 2021 Strategic Plan, HFHPME will serve more people than ever before through decent and affordable housing. This innovative and bold plan will triple the number of families served annually, and includes a shift to a new business model that leverages private fundraising with financial and nonprofit partnerships. The Vice President of Finance will play a critical role in implementing the new business model.


Position Overview

Serving as an integral member of the leadership team, the Vice President of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial management strategy of Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East. In addition to the strategic components, the Vice President is responsible for coordinating the accuracy and integrity of accounting, budgeting, data and reporting across the organization, and for managing the day-to-day cash and internal controls.


The Vice President of Finance leads a team of staff that executes all financial transactions, and consults with department heads and staff to ensure accurate, timely, and useful financial information for the operating departments, management, Finance Committee and the Board of Directors. This encompasses construction job costing, thrift retail, nonprofit and government accounting, and internal business data management.

               

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Budget Development and Management

·        Lead annual budget development process

·        Own and maintain multi-year budget outlook and projections

·        Develop budget dashboards for budget managers

·        Create monthly cash flow report for leadership team and Board


Financial Controls and Risk Management

·        In coordination with COO, ensure that the organization has adequate financial controls and establish additional controls as necessary

·        Procure and manage appropriate and comprehensive insurance coverage for the organization

·        Assist COO in analysis of opportunities to improve business performance and effectiveness

·        Serve as the staff lead on the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors

·        Report current and forecasted financial position of the organization to the President and the Board of Directors


Accounting and Annual Audit

·        Oversee accounting functions including the general ledger, account reconciliations, transaction

processing (AR, AP, GL), and purchase order control. Facilitate accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual closes and preparation of financial statements

·        Manage the Finance team to ensure the accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions

·        Manage cash-flow and bank accounts, and maintain accurate forecasts of organization’s cash position

·        Maintains current knowledge and understanding of accounting and tax regulations, laws, industry trends, practices. Establish policies and procedures for compliance, including compliance with US government A‐133 reporting.

·        Lead preparation of the financial audit and tax filings, working closely with external auditors; prepare highlights of key business indicators for the organization’s annual report


Management and Organizational Support

·        Support HR Manager with implementation of payroll and benefits

·        Oversee the Government Grants Manager and ensure government grants are fully utilized and in compliance

·        Oversee Bookkeeper activities to ensure timely invoice processing and payment

·        Oversee Business Analyst activities in support of leveraging organizational data streams for decision management

·        Collaborate with Homeownership Programs, Construction, ReStore, and Resource Development departments regarding implementation of best practices; staying within established budgets and guidelines and streamlining processes


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in accounting; CPA and/or CMA, is preferred.
  • 8 years proven leadership experience in a financial/accounting role, with a minimum of 5 years supervisory experience in a management position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Substantial experience in midrange accounting applications with strong technical and accounting systems foundation. QuickBooks Enterprise Contractor version experience is preferred. Proven record of accomplishment in creating structure and best practice internal controls within an organization is desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial regulatory guidelines and procedures as it relates to 501(c)(3); solid understanding of non-profit accounting and reporting, construction accounting, tax preparation and grant administration.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles to include cash flow management, financial analysis, understanding of GAAP, and creation and implementation of internal controls.
  • Possess skills in problem resolution, initiative, prioritizing, implementing process enhancements, and handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs 
  • Strong detail orientation; ability to manage multiple overlapping priorities.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
