Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Location: Brookline, MA or San Francisco Bay Area

Status: Exempt

Who we are:

 Facing History and Ourselves is an international, educational nonprofit organization with a mission to engage students and teachers of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. For over 40 years, we have provided educators with professional development and best-in-class educational resources that enable students to conduct rigorous investigations of the development of difficult histories, including the Holocaust, Reconstruction, the struggle for civil rights in the United States, the fall of apartheid in South Africa, and other key historical moments worldwide. Students explore the individual choices that led to mass violence or systemic discrimination—as well as decision-making that led to positive change—and reflect on the choices they face today and consider how they can make a difference as “upstanders,” rather than bystanders.

The leadership and staff of Facing History have developed a clear plan to dramatically increase impact over the next five years. The Senior Director will bring innovative ideas, best practices and solutions to support the design and creation of a robust business development plan and drive institutional development strategies required to take Facing History to the next level of sustainability and impact.

Who you are:

You will build and nurture partnerships with foundations, corporations and government entities. Moreover, these partnerships will include both institutional donor centric and earned income models, such as fee for service and/or teacher credentialing, and school sponsorship. You will work closely with senior leadership in other functions, such as the Marketing and Program, to collaboratively build and manage initiatives to support the growth of partnerships.

The role:

Essential responsibilities include:

Foundation Relations

Lead and support a dedicated team of 5 professionals who manage a pipeline to secure more than $8 million from institutional and private family foundations. They will coach, supervise and evaluate the Director of Foundation Relations and a team of indirect reports. When appropriate, the Senior Director will also provide the relationship management for foundation supporters;

Working closely with the Research, Foundation Relations, Development, and Executive teams, the Senior Director will help identify and qualify prospective foundations, execute foundation solicitations, and steward foundation donors.

Corporate Partnerships:

In collaboration with the Marketing Department, the Senior Director will develop a holistic corporate sponsorship model for Facing History, including national and local / international events, programmatic assets, and a school sponsorship model;

In coordination with the Program Department, they will study the feasibility and potential ROI of a corporate engagement model, whereby Facing History content and pedagogy is re-purposed to support the employee engagement aims of corporations;

The Senior Director will segment, target and secure more large-scale corporate partners that align and are compatible with Facing History’s mission, vision and values and that also have the capacity to invest $250K+ in Facing History's strategic plan;

Public Sector Partnerships:

The Senior Director will identify the highest yield local, state, and federal funding opportunities. In coordination with Marketing, they will be responsible for developing a public sector relations strategy for a tier of high potential prospects. This individual will provide recommendations to senior level executives on a future infrastructure to expand and support this strategy.

They will facilitate the development of a new earned income model with the Program Department where Facing History can begin to build new partnerships with schools at the districts level, at state departments of education, with federal agencies, charter management organizations, and other relevant potential partners, such as teacher training providers;

 

Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S., 15+ years experience in Business Development, Fundraising, and/or Education Administration;
  • Passion for Facing History’s mission to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry through education;
  • Ability to articulate the mission of Facing History and the need for our services, both in writing and when speaking and presenting publically in meetings and events;
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills including team building, team participation andleadership;
  • Strong experience with project management, managing organizational change and leading change;
  • Prior experience with enterprise-wide strategic planning and articulating any cross-functional dependencies required to implement new strategies related to new institutional revenue streams;
  • Strong service orientation towards supporting operations in regional offices;
  • Accessible, transparent, and consultative management style that inspires trust and confidence;
  • Track record of partnering and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • A prior background in both for profit and educational nonprofit with an ability to navigate between the different work cultures is a plus.
