Senior Accountant

To assist us in meeting our mission, Project Bread – The Walk for Hunger is seeking a Senior Accountant to work closely with the Chief Financial Officer during a time of strategic growth across the organization. This is an ideal role for a Senior Accountant who wants to be personally involved in all finance functions, see the impact of their work, and add value to a high profile mission based organization.  

The Role:  

The Senior Accountant partners closely with the CFO as well as colleagues throughout the organization to provide high quality service, meaningful analysis, and ensures the completeness, accuracy, and integrity of the organization’s books and records. The Senior Accountant is responsible for the day to day duties of the finance, payroll, and human resources functions. Specific activities include accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, account reconciliations, month-end close, financial analysis, payroll processing, onboarding and off boarding personnel, benefits maintenance, and personnel file maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly finance department functions
  •  Manages Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and Human Resources.
  • Performs the monthly accounting close. This includes making all journal entries, and account reconciliations, and producing financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow).
  • Performs all bank reconciliations, which are not complete until they are in balance with the general ledger.
  • Creates, prepares, and updates Excel spreadsheets for general ledger analysis of cash, investments, debt, prepaid expenses, accounts receivable, and other general ledger accounts monthly.
  • Prepares all schedules for the annual independent financial audit, tax returns, and UFR. Manages the coordination of all audit documentation requests.
  • Performs daily and monthly cash flow for the CFO. Monitors and manages cash inflows and outflows, and makes appropriate cash transfers.
  • Prepares monthly allocation entry for salaries, consultants, and shared expenses.
  • Ensures monthly reconciliation of Institutional Advancement gifts through Raiser’s Edge to the general ledger system. Ensures the timeliness and accuracy in the recording of all securities gifts.
  • Prepares a quarterly 941 reconciliation between the payroll system and the general ledger.
  • Charges benefits and taxes by employee and allocates depreciation, interest, and overhead by department as part of the monthly accounting close.
  • Prepares grant and other billings for approval and monitors for timeliness and accuracy.
  • Maintains financial data for annuity gifts including updating for new gifts, year-end reconciling and tax documentation.
  • Participates in the annual budgeting process.
  • Manage and maintain HR functions and files
  • On board and off board employees using checklist and forms.
  • Tracks paid time off.
  • Manages the 403(b) and retirement accounts.
  • Maintains employee files.
  • Processes benefits transactions such as health, dental, FSA, HRA, and Charliecard.
  • Updates IT and 3rd party vendors of employee changes.

Organizational Responsibilities and/or Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Performs special projects for the CFO.
  • Collaborates with other members of the organization as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • CPA is a plus.
  • Excellent working knowledge of accounting principles, methods, and standards with the ability to adapt these established methods to varied accounting transactions.
  • Ability to perform detailed work involving written and numerical data and to make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to interpret financial statements and prepare complete and accurate reports and statements.
  • Ability to work independently and with initiative in a small office environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.       
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills.
  • QuickBooks experience preferred.
