JOB TITLE:  Retail Lead Stock Associate

REPORTS TO:  Retail Manager

FLSA:   Non-Exempt



Located at the Lorraine Motel, the

assassination site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the National Civil Rights

Museum chronicles the American civil rights movement, examines today’s global

civil and human rights issues, provokes thoughtful debate, and serves as a

catalyst for positive social change.


The Retail Lead Stock Associate reports to the Retail Manager. He or she is responsible for managing merchandise control for the Lorraine and Legacy museum stores

and is responsible for the flow of merchandise from a central point of delivery

to the museum sales floor.  This position

is responsible for receiving, unpacking, processing, organizing, storing,

packaging, and labeling merchandise.  They

must contribute to the profitability of the retail operation by receiving,

handling, and managing the inventory of merchandise and supplies in a timely

and organized manner.  Other

responsibilities include maintaining merchandising and visual display standards

as well as the accurate and efficient fulfillment of merchandise.  Stock and inventory levels must be maintained

to maximize the sales potential of the stores. Leadership and teamwork are

required to give guidance and directions to sales and stockroom staff, temporary

inventory workers, and summer interns.


Works under the general direction of the Retail Manager

·        Positively impacts customer experience through display and visual appeal

·        Ensures that products are accessible, constantly available, and properly distributed

·        Checks merchandise and supply deliveries for accuracy, and verifies that the quantity received matches the bills of lading, purchase orders, and other documents

·        Performs physical inventory counts and participates in formal periodic inventory audits

·        Decreases store shrinkage by researching inventory discrepancies and reporting irregular

variances to the Store Manager

·        Manages stock and merchandising

·        Works with management to maintain the perpetual inventory system, stock levels and receiving

·        Enters receivers in retail software and tags merchandise

·        Notifies Retail Manager when inventory stock levels are low

·        Processes web store orders and fulfillment

·        Maintains completely stocked shelves with the support of the team

·        Acquires comprehensive knowledge of merchandise and trains sales associates

·        Prepares a variety of status reports

·        Effectively communicates across departmental lines

·        Contributes to organizational planning by providing the goals and tactics associated with achieving financial performance objectives through stock/sales

·        Perform essential duties and responsibilities independently with minimal supervision

·        Organizes the stockroom and ensures accurate labeling, logical placement, neat arrangement, and cleanliness

·        Clearly communicate specifications to co-workers orally and in writing

·        Basic knowledge of Microsoft programs and perpetual inventory software is a plus

The Retail Lead Stock Associate performs additional functions (essential or otherwise), which may be assigned from time to time. The position requires work on weekends, holidays, and may require evening work.  



·        Requires the ability to operate general office equipment, including computer,  postage machine, calculator, and merchandising pricing systems

·        Must exhibit strong people skills and be comfortable interacting with the general public

·        While the majority of the work is performed inside, some outdoor work is required during various Museum-related functions

  • Must be able to walk and stand for long periods of time, bending, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and performing repetitive motions
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and climb a ladder
  • Must be able to communicate professionally with internal & external customers including staff, consultants, Board of Directors, and potential donors


·        High school diploma (or equivalent)

·        Experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

·        Requires knowledge of planning techniques

·        Must be able to persuade and influence others

·        Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills

·        Must be able to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse global community

  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures is essential
  • Must demonstrate the ability to analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to write effectively and clearly
