Managing Editor, Social Research: An International Quarterly, The New School for Social Research

Social Research: An International Quarterly is the flagship journal of the New School for Social Research, published continuously since 1934. The NSSR is known internationally for its commitment to progressive ideas and its rigorous, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning. The incumbent reports to the Editor and oversees all aspects of the journal’s production and publication, and participates in the conception and production of events related to the journal’s issues and interests. This is a one-year, part-time position, with benefits, at 28 hours per week, with the possibility for renewal or extension.

Responsibilities

·    Assist Editor on selection and development of potential themes, identification of possible authors for future issues, and correspondence with invitees; and with other journal-related correspondence.

·    Ensure that submitted manuscripts and ancillary material meet editorial and copyright requirements, house specs, and deadlines; proofread, format, line-edit and/or rewrite manuscripts as needed. 

·    Track all correspondence and deliverables in shared files for use by on-site and remote editorial team members; maintain archive of back issue correspondence and other files.

·    Supervise freelance copy editor, cover designer, and team of student editorial assistants. 

·    Communicate with outside publisher regarding print production, distribution, financial reporting, marketing, compliance with USPS regulations, and other matters that may arise. 

·    Manage annual operating budget, including tracking of revenue and submitting expenses.

·    Maintain website, social media campaigns, and email list; produce marketing and publicity material (print- and email-based); arrange for sale of issues during webinars and at on-campus events (post-pandemic).

·    Coordinate and take notes at meetings of the editorial board; facilitate follow-up correspondence with board members. 

·    Liaise with other University departments and offices as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

·    Minimum three years of managerial experience in academic journals publishing. 

·    Minimum two years of experience with writing and managing budgets. 

·    MA in social sciences or humanities; demonstrated familiarity with and interest in disciplines covered by Social Research. 

·    Exemplary writing, editorial, communications, research, and interpersonal skills. 

·    Ability to manage multiple priorities under deadline, monitoring overarching project trajectories and timelines while tracking details and anticipating needs and deadlines.

·    Ability to work both independently and under close management.

Preferred Qualifications

·    Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, web maintenance; familiarity with MyDay a plus.
