ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

CityBridge Education’s vision is for the nation’s capital to be the first city-level proof point for an excellent, equitable education system. A Washington, DC-based nonprofit, we incubate the people, ideas, and conversations needed for equity-centered innovation in DC’s public schools and social enterprises. We do this by identifying talented leaders and school designers who can solve the educational needs and challenges of DC families, deploying particular effort to recruiting leaders of color. We then incubate and invest in the best of their ideas and, together, bring to market the next generation of transformational public schools and education ventures.

POSITION SUMMARY

We believe the challenges facing DC’s young people can be solved both inside and outside of the traditional school building. To that end, in the fall of 2020 we launched CityBridge Ventures, a six-month incubation program to support entrepreneurs seeking to start non-school social ventures. During the pilot year, we set out to learn whether there would be demand for this type of programming, what key content would support the development of equity-centered education ventures, and how to integrate non-school start-up strategies and lessons into our overall incubation portfolio. In the pilot program, we incubated three early-stage ventures, providing them with funding, bi-weekly workshops, and one-on-one coaching. They concluded the six-month experience with a business plan and presented their venture in the inaugural Ventures Showcase. We are currently looking for an experienced leader who can build on the learning from our first year, quickly create relationships with our new cohort of entrepreneurs, and design programming that fosters innovation, inclusion, and excellence. This role comes with great autonomy and responsibility, as this person would be owning the design and execution of the Venture incubation program.

This is a DC-based position and will require living in the DC area by Fall 2021.

YOUR LEGACY

You will play a significant role in CityBridge Education’s social entrepreneurship incubation programming in the following ways:

  1. Program Director (45%): You will be responsible for directing the day-to-day activities of the Ventures program. The key roles of the director are to facilitate professional learning modules and workshops, cultivate a learning-focused, inclusive cohort culture, conduct diligence with external stakeholders and vendors for potential partnerships, and manage grants for entrepreneurs. Success as a program director will rely heavily on your ability to manage multiple projects, remain attentive to detail, and track and measure progress.
  2. Program Designer and Strategist (25%): You will be responsible for designing the expansion of Ventures beyond its current stage (Design Residency Stage III), to both earlier stage (Design Fellowship Stage II) and later stage programs (Design Residency Stages IV and V). Eventually, CityBridge will build out five stages, and Ventures will be a parallel track to the “New-Start Schools” track. Success as a program designer will require considerable strategic planning and collaboration with the entire Incubation team to create a seamless and effective programming pipeline.
  3. Coach (15%): A substantive portion of CityBridge’s programming involves one-on-one coaching with entrepreneurs in our portfolio. Successful coaching involves a strengths-based approach and requires you to serve as a critical thought partner and to build trust and psychological safety in order to more wholly develop the entrepreneur and their venture.
  4. Collaborator (15%): You will collaborate with all members of the CityBridge team. You will partner closely with the other Incubation Directors to strengthen the alignment across our programmatic areas. You will be responsible for supporting cross-team efforts that will include recruitment and selection activities, special projects, and internal organization wide initiatives.

YOU WILL EXCEL IF YOU

  • Have 7+ years of aligned work experience (e.g. leadership coach, program management, entrepreneurship)
  • Have a background in social entrepreneurship or working with early-stage social entrepreneurs. Added plus if you have a background in K-12 education, business management, nonprofit finance, or have launched your own education venture
  • Excellent strategic thinking, planning, and analytical skills
  • Are a self-starter, able to take initiative with little guidance, regularly assess progress and adjust course as necessary
  • Have a track record of successfully facilitating adult learning and leading adults through challenging work
  • Have a strong commitment to equity, applying an anti-racist lens to the work that you have done and will do
  • Demonstrate experience and aptitude in project management and leading a small team of people

We expect the new Director to commit to at least two years at CityBridge Education. Preferred start date is mid-July to early August to allow for overlap with the outgoing director.
