As Vice President of Politics and Advocacy, you will serve as a leader of our small team by creating and executing a political strategy that advances our unique mission. This in-person role, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, will focus on RISE’s electoral and advocacy campaigns and training programs.

You will direct the overall field, community organizing, and government relations strategies in Indianapolis, maximizing outreach to key constituency groups.

Major areas of responsibility include:

Campaign Plan Design and Execution
  • Build on RISE’s success in all four 2020 Indianapolis Public Schools Board of Commissioners elections
  • Coordinate multiple candidate campaigns, including for the three 2022 Indianapolis Public Schools Board of Commissioners elections
  • Carry out strategic advocacy campaigns to support RISE-endorsed education legislation, policies, and public spending
  • Conduct generic voter registration drives and community education campaigns to increase awareness of public school issues and participation in elections for education offices.
  • Recruit and train prospective candidates, campaigners, and advocates, and oversee RISE’s signature Circle City Leaders program
  • Oversee candidate endorsement and campaign contribution processes
Staff, Consultant, and Vendor Management
  • Recruit, train, and manage teams of field and community organizers (6-10) and volunteers (200+)
  • Supervise in-house campaign data and staff
  • Serve as the direct manager for RISE’s Director of Organizing and Data Director roles
  • Select and coordinate digital, mail, polling, research, and lobbying contractors (10-20) to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Implement reporting standards and track progress on daily, weekly, and quarterly targets
External Partner and Government Relations Liaison
  • Coordinate with key partners to ensure alignment on strategy and messages
  • Meet with and educate community groups and civic leaders, including local, municipal, and state elected officials, about public education
  • Build coalitions and facilitate discourse on Indianapolis education issues
  • Advocate for policies, laws, and funding for RISE-supported proposals

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong applicants will have the following skills and experiences:
  • An unwavering commitment to community-driven change and advancing racial equity
  • 10+ years professional experience
  • 3+ years political, legislative, and/or public affairs experience across varying levels of government (e.g., local, municipal, state legislature, statewide office, federal)
  • 4+ cycles of campaign manager, field director, or comparable electoral campaign experience
  • Proven success with voter contact programs
  • Preference given to applicants with community organizing experience, especially diverse communities
  • Education-related campaign/organizational management preferred
  • Expertise in EveryAction/NGP VAN campaign & voter file software and tracking reporting processes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite
  • Access to reliable transportation, full clean driving license preferred
  • Ideal candidate is flexible and an adaptable executor with an entrepreneurial spirit
