Description

Powerhouse Workshop is a contemporary arts center and art fabrication facility established to serve the needs of working artists. Scheduled to open in its permanent home in 2020, the Powerhouse Workshop will provide industrial fabrication shops, a materials library, and flexible space for exhibitions, installations and public program- supporting investigation, experimentation, and collaboration across media and disciplines. Currently, Powerhouse Workshop is operating a number of its facilities and programs off-site, including its textile fabrication shop, which opened in early 2018.


Powerhouse is seeking a Textile Shop Director to join the shop’s current team of fabricators to oversee shop and project management, and lead business development and marketing efforts. The Textile Shop Director will play a key role in shaping the shop’s operations, team, and suite of services. This position will report to the Director of Strategic Planning, and will work closely with staff, consultants, and artist clients.


Areas of responsibility will include:


Shop Management

- Work with Powerhouse management and current shop staff to develop and implement workshop capabilities, operations, and protocols.

- Manage day-to-day needs of the workshop facility

- Coordinate purchasing, maintaining and replacing equipment

- Develop and implement staffing plans and work plans

- Manage, train, and grow workshop team

- Help establish performance goals

- Manage budgets and financial projections

- Develop and implement guides for artists and institutions working with the shop Project Execution

- Work collaboratively with fabrication staff on client communication

- Develop project budgets, schedules and staffing plans

- Oversee the execution of textile fabrication projects, staying on time and on budget

- Create and send project estimates and invoices

- Manage subcontractors


Business Development

- Build relationships with new clients, including individual artists, institutions, and galleries

- In collaboration with the Powerhouse and shop staff, develop and execute a marketing plan for the workshop

- Develop relationships with external partners who have complementary fabrication expertise

- Work with current shop staff to identify projects and artist collaborations to pursue

- Work collaboratively with the Director of Cultural Production and other shop directors to facilitate fabrication projects


Qualifications

- Strong command of multiple textile fabrication processes, including but not limited to stitching, weaving, kitting, dyeing, and tufting

- Significant experience managing a textile business or workshop

- Significant experience managing and growing teams of fabricators, including giving feedback and performance reviews

- Experience working with artists, galleries, and fabricators

- Experience with health and safety protocols and OSHA compliance

- Flexible, creative, resourceful, and able to solve problems

- 10+ years of relevant work experience

- Fluent in G Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Dropbox platforms required

- Qualified candidates of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply
