BASIC FUNCTION:

Sojourner House operates a comprehensive housing program for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The residential program includes a Safe House, or emergency shelter, for women and children who have experienced domestic violence in northern Rhode Island; a shelter for male-identified victims; and a shelter for male-identified victims. The agency also runs a transitional housing program in two separate locations. The Residential Advocate will provide case management and advocacy to clients in the shelter programs and transitional housing apartments. The Advocate will also identify and implement initiatives to benefit the residential housing program and work with community partners to facilitate collaboration. The Advocate will assist the Director of Shelter Operations by responding to maintenance issues related to agency properties, work directly with vendors, and ensure that agency-owned properties are kept safe, clean, and in compliance with building codes.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

Provide individual case management services to residents in Sojourner House’s Safe House and transitional housing program. This includes weekly 1:1 meetings, regular in-person or phone check-ins, and periodic visits to their apartment (if they are transitional housing clients). Develop action plans with clients that outline goals related to obtaining education, employment, child care and permanent housing. Assist clients in obtaining appropriate substance abuse, mental health, and/or medical services as needed.

Provide assistance to the Director of Shelter Operations for the repair and maintenance of the Safe House and transitional housing apartment building, including cleanliness.

Assist with reviewing all shelter and transitional housing intakes, refer them to the Residential Team for review, and communicate regularly with the Director of Shelter Operations about possible admissions to the residential housing program. Revise shelter intake policies as necessary.

Identify and implement new projects and programming that will benefit residential clients.  Work closely with Sojourner House management to develop new initiatives and maintain existing programs that will help Sojourner House offer the most dynamic and effective services to its residential housing clients.

Work with shelter staff to ensure that the programming being offered is reflective of the clients’ current needs. At a minimum, the Advocate will facilitate 1-2 support groups, meetings or programs per week that will benefit residential clients. The Advocate will regularly assess the needs of Sojourner House’s residential housing clients.

Supervise and volunteers/interns who work with the residential program, and oversee the schedule for these advocates.

Assist, when appropriate, with securing donations for the Safe House. This may include working with local churches, community groups, and businesses to make donations of supplies (such as toiletries, cleaning supplies, and gift cards) to support the shelter.

Work with the Youth Advocate to coordinate children’s services and make referrals as necessary for families with minor children. This may include but is not limited to: enrollment in the local school system, art expressive therapy groups, tutoring sessions, play groups, field trips, after school, recreational and enrichment activities, child care and mental health programs.

Monitor and implement Safe Home policies, and ensure that residents follow these rules and procedures by creating an environment of trust and community. Make recommendations for policy changes or modifications when appropriate.
