Venture for America is a two year fellowship that recruits, selects, and trains highly talented recent college grads, places them at startups in emerging US cities, and provides them with access to the network and resources to become company builders and job creators. The Fellowship is highly selective, as is our team, and we’re looking for people who can jump in and make an impact.

The Fundraising Team at VFA helps drive growth and maintain stability at Venture for America through building partnerships with both national and in-city funders. We work to support the work of all teams through raising philanthropic and corporate support. We work cross functionally with all of the other departments at Venture For America so that the organization can operate efficiently.

VFA seeks a Development Senior Associate to support the activities of our fundraising team. This role works closely with the VP and Director of Strategic Partnerships and helps implement the majority of fundraising efforts with foundations, corporate funders, individuals and government donors.

Grant & Report writing (40%)

  • Author draft Letters of Intent (LOIs), grant proposals, and grant reports for existing corporate, foundation, individual, and government donors, collaborating across teams to gather and include relevant inputs and necessary data into each narrative
  • Assemble all relevant components of proposals and ensures that VFA’s proposal submissions comply with all proposal parameters and detailed requirements for each funder
  • Meet proposal deadlines by adhering to systems and timelines for the different phases of proposal creation including information gathering, writing, review, approval, and transmittal

Prospecting (30%)

  • Identify, research, and recommend new potential foundation, individual, corporate and government funding prospects that align with VFA’s organizational vision, mission, and strategy
  • Collaborate with fundraisers to maintain prospect database and robust pipelines of new potential funders
  • Support individual giving and events strategies

Grants management (30%)

  • Support grant management activities for secured grants, including documenting and communicating reporting requirements, tracking correspondence with funders, and tracking funder reporting requirements and action items
  • Collaborate with the Development Associate to create and maintain internal systems, structures, and processes to streamline and organize the Development team’s activities and workflow, particularly with regard to foundation, corporate, and government grants

In addition to the responsibilities unique to this role as described above, all VFA team members devote a portion of their time to Fellow recruitment and selection, which occurs on an ongoing basis between August and March, as well as other internal strategic projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to draft and proofread high-quality documents
  • Demonstrated experience with donor management
  • Experience with and knowledge of Salesforce or other fundraising CRM
  • Highly independent, organized, reliable, and able to balance multiple priorities to meet deadlines
  • Have a passion for and commitment to exceptional quality and customer service
  • Solutions-oriented and resourceful self-starter who shows determination to solve problems and has the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Positive attitude and humble service-oriented approach
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment across multiple programs and department
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential information in a trustworthy and reliable manner
  • Experience with events management

  • Two years of working in fundraising or in a nonprofit setting preferred
  • Experience with or knowledge of start-ups or economic development a plus

  • High performers at VFA are given substantial opportunity to grow and develop
  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience
  • Great benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), commuter benefits, flexible spending account, and gym, tech, and professional development stipends
  • Generous vacation policy, plenty of paid holidays, and regular work from home Fridays
  • VFA is a dynamic nonprofit environment with varied responsibilities and a different challenge each day (we mean it – always plenty of interesting problems to work on!)
