WRITING ASSOCIATE/PROJECT MANAGER POSITION OVERVIEW

Frances Moore Lappé—author of Diet for a Small Planet and 18 other books, including the most recent Daring Democracy—is working on a new book entitled: It’s Not Too Late! Crisis, Opportunity, and the Power of Hope. We are seeking an associate who is passionate about exploring the interconnected roots of, and solutions to, the crises of democracy and climate change and extreme inequality. Preference is given to applicants who have experience and expertise in writing and project management.


Strong candidates would also have strong skills and significant experience in related research, project management, organizing tasks, and intern supervision. This position will work directly and closely with Lappé, as well as supervising interns. The work will include concept development, research, editing, fact-checking, supervision, and general project management. In-person presence in our Cambridge office is required. Small Planet Institute is conveniently located near the Harvard T and our office is informal and cheery.


TIME COMMITMENT

This is a temporary, full-time contract position. We ask for a commitment of 40 hours per week in our Harvard Square office because of the collaborative nature of the work. We are seeking to fill this position as soon as possible and it will continue through June 2020, with the possibility of extending.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong interest in the topics covered, along with strong analytical and writing strengths
  • Project management skills and experience, particularly in organizing and tracking details, files, and timelines.
  • A background in climate change, democratic economics, and political-democracy reforms is needed.
  • Excellent written communication skills are needed, including editing, research, and fact-checking using the fact-checking procedures.
  • Experience and skills in intern supervision are necessary, including delegation of online research projects and ensuring proper fact-checking procedures are followed, and ongoing support.
  • A passion for democratic social movements and the mission of the Small Planet Institute is required.
  • Comfortable with teamwork and individual work, and able participate in an open exchange of ideas with Frances.
  • Ability to excel with minimal direction and supervision, and also able to follow directions when given. 


DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with Frances with an open exchange of ideas as they work together.
  • Book writing project management including organizing and tracking details, files, and timelines.
  • Research assistance on the new book.
  • Intern supervision including delegation of online research projects and ensuring proper fact-checking procedures are followed, and ongoing support.
  • Copy-editing and fact-checking using of the fact-checking procedures.
