Description

The National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), located in Alexandria, VA, was founded in 1938 and is the national trade association representing the political jurisdictions that directly control the distribution and sale of alcohol within their borders. NABCA's mission is to support alcohol control systems by providing health, safety and economic research, offering data analytics for the advancement of efficient alcohol regulatory systems, fostering relationships with key stakeholders, and managing resources to address pertinent policies regarding the responsible sale and consumption of alcohol.

 

     NABCA has an immediate vacancy for a Communications Associate to provide writing/editorial, social media, and graphic design support to the Communications and Public Policy Department.  The Communications Associate writes/edits news releases, edits/proofreads documents, writes blogs, publishes social media content for a variety of audiences, increases levels of member and industry engagement in platforms, assists with graphic design projects, etc. The Communications Associate reports to the Director of Communications.

 

Duties:

Communications/Public Relations: Writes and edits news releases, publishes blogposts, and distributes communications and public relations copy that is relevant for various NABCA stakeholders; performs writing and editorial tasks and produces communications work products as assigned; recommends content for NABCA's informational survey initiativesorganizes materials for conferences, trade shows and other NABCA events as assigned; maintains directory of media contacts to assist the communications director in strengthening relationships with key journalists; assists in managing media relations and requests; serves as backup for the daily news update.

Social Media:  Regularly creates, publishes and shares content via social media to build meaningful connections and increase various stakeholders' understanding of control systems and member agencies; uses knowledge of social media platforms and channels to help NABCA develop and execute research-based social media strategies, identify key players and audiences, recommend messaging delivery method (video, audio, written) and other strategies; researches and recommends platforms (existing and emerging) that are appropriate for the association; monitors user-generated content on each platform publishing NABCA data and responds or acts accordingly; maintains directory of social media contacts; creates shared editorial calendars and syndication schedules to coordinate content posting across platforms; uses appropriate online and offline channels to promote meetings, events, and webcasts; expands NABCA's presence on appropriate online platforms by continuously analyzing relevant social metrics, insights and best practices; makes recommendations on the tools and best practices to develop and track key performance indicators; provides regular social media reports using relevant metrics to assist the communications director in managing a range of priorities; obtains approval from the communications director for messaging on social media platforms.

Graphic Design:  Uses experience with layout and design to assist in creating clean, simple, professionally formatted materials for print and electronic use consistent with NABCA's communications and design standards and guidelines; assists with communications and interactions with printing firms, if needed; special projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelors' degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Graphic Design, New Media, Liberal Arts, or other relevant course of study and a minimum of seven years of directly relevant work experience are required; a minimum of ten years of directly relevant work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills; clear, concise writing, strong editing and excellent proofreading skills are essential; precise attention to detail is required.

Must have strong analytical skills, the ability to conduct basic research and communicate and present ideas clearly and logically; the ability to comprehend and appropriately use NABCA's research resources is essential.

Must have an intermediate level of experience with various social media platforms, metrics, and analytics tools; experience using social media tools and best practices as the basis for improvements to content, engaging existing audiences, increasing numbers of followers, recommending and administering new platforms is required; familiarity with web design or web development is preferred.

Must possess an intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Power Point, Excel, video editing software), internet tools, etc.; basic experience with graphic design software tools (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator etc.); must have experience creating or updating visually appealing, professional materials customized for different audiences; familiarity with PR "suite" software such as Cision (or similar application) is preferred.

Familiarity with communications/PR plans, strategies, and the development of solutions in times of public relations crisis is preferred; experience assisting in the execution of public relations campaigns and/or initiatives is desirable.

Must be extremely well organized, detail oriented, and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects; must be attentive to timelines, cost estimates and deadlines.

Must be able to exercise appropriate judgment to understand and identify appropriate responses to inquiries and requests received via social media platforms.

Must be a team player with a positive attitude who possesses strong interpersonal skills and can work effectively as a part of a cohesive team; the ability to interact professionally with others both internally and externally at all times is essential; an excellent work ethic and ability to remain flexible to a changing environment are essential.

Must be proactive, courteous, approachable, comfortable sharing ideas, and willing to be fully engaged in learning; a passion for being a part of a team committed to strengthening the communications program is essential.
