Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory supports unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization. Since its first production in 2007, a 9,216-square-foot action painting by Aaron Young created by 10 choreographed motorcyclists, the Armory has organized and presented innovative and immersive programs—from site-specific art installations, to opera, theater, and dance performances. With its period rooms by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, and Herter Brothers and its soaring 55,000 sq. ft. Drill Hall, the Armory breaks the mold of traditional presentation, enabling artists to create, students to explore, and wide audiences to experience epic and unexpected work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York.


In 2010, the Armory launched its arts education program with the goal of using the Armory’s unique assets – a magical ruined palace setting and an out-of-the-box, immersive visual and performing arts program – to give under-served public school students the tools to think creatively and confidently, while developing a sense of pride in their relationship to this magnificent historic building. Over the years, arts education has grown in prominence in the institution and now shares equal standing with the Armory’s artistic programming.


The Armory’s emergence as an unparalleled cultural center is accompanied by a simultaneous physical transformation; led by Pritzker Prize-winning firm Herzog & de Meuron, the design for a multi-year renovation will bring an extraordinary venue into the 21st century while carefully preserving the legacy of a national landmark. The Armory has spent $155 Million on capital projects in the past ten years including the restoration of four period interiors and renewed infrastructure to support arts presentation in the Drill Hall. Of that $155 million, about $112 million was spent on upgraded infrastructure, façade work and life safety systems.  


With an FY17 operating budget of $20M and contributed income of more than $7M, the Armory has experienced explosive growth since its founding in 2007. That growth is expected to continue at a rate of approximately 10% per year in the near-term so that the Armory can continue to expand its programming and educational offerings and develop its staff infrastructure. 




Position Summary / Essential Job Functions


Reporting to the Managing Director and serving as the primary liaison for facilities, the Director of Facilities’ responsibilities include:

  • Manage maintenance and cleaning of buildings and grounds including exterior sidewalk and gardens;
  • Manage and oversee departmental budget;
  • Manage administration of Facilities Department and support of staff, including office management functions, purchasing, IT and telecom maintenance;
  • Manage entire engineering, operation and mechanical staff including BMS Control systems, chiller plant, steam station and hot water systems, elevators and annual maintenance contracts;
  • Oversee maintenance, testing and service of the fire alarm system in conjunction with the Director of Security;
  • Assist and coordinate with the Capital Department on infrastructure construction projects;  
  • Work to develop preventive maintenance and energy management programs for all infrastructures as new systems are brought on line;
  • Assist and coordinate with Production Department on building theatrical systems and distribution as well as provide staff support for productions and rental;
  • Manage special projects as needed.


Experience & Education


  • Ten plus years in Facilities Management is required, with at least five years in a senior management position in a demanding real estate environment, preferably arts related.
  • Must have a proven history and progression of supervisory experience and leadership, indicating knowledge of practices of management, supervision, and training. Must be highly computer literate; knowledge of BMS computer environment is desirable. Knowledgeable in labor relations is required. Knowledge of fire safety, security operations, safety regulations and codes and safe work practices is required.
  • Must have working knowledge of construction, building infrastructure, engineering and ability to read technical drawings and specifications for pre and post construction as well as theater planning. Must have familiarity with codes and ordinances affecting construction and repair, especially in historic facilities. Must have sensitivity to preserving and protecting landmark structures.

  • Bachelor’s degree in management or a technical field preferred

  • Spanish language proficiency a plus

  • FSD certification a plus
