Launch EL Charter School is part of a network of 14 EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) and NYC Outward Bound schools in New York City and is the NYC network’s first charter school. EL is a proven educational model being implemented in over 150 district, charter and independent schools across the country. Launch's mission is to prepare students in under-resourced communities to thrive in college and careers by providing a public education rooted in active learning experiences and powerful character development. Launch is seeking a Director of Instructional Coaching with a track record of success to join a highly motivated, curious, intelligent, and passionate staff of educators under the EL Education model, an approach that believes in creating classrooms where learning is “challenging, active, meaningful, character driven, and public.”

Role Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this role are divided into two domains: (1) Instructional Leadership, (2) Leadership Visibility, & Relationship Building


Domain #1: Instructional Leadership


Lead the coaching program at Launch by working directly with department chairs and coaching a portfolio of teachers in implementing high-level practices in co-teaching, special education and ELL strategies, and EL Education practices


CONCRETE ACTIONS FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN THIS DOMAIN


Classroom Observation & Feedback Cycles

  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of classrooms with an emphasis on excellence in teaching
  • Ensure that teachers are receiving weekly feedback in some form – whole school, individual, and/or co-teaching
  • Collaborate with AP of Student Achievement and department chair team to give data-driven and aligned feedback


Coaching Program (Systems & Structures)


  • Set and refine vision of instructional coaching at Launch in collaboration with the ILT
  • Manage systems and structures used to coach teachers in all three dimensions of student achievement
  • Set goals with department chairs and manage the completion of inquiry cycles
  • Coach and develop a portfolio of teachers and teacher leaders (e.g. department chairs) in improving their practice
  • Lead a selection of weekly planning meetings and data analysis meetings with teachers and leaders 
  • Support case study planning and lesson planning when appropriate


Inquiry Cycles (Systems and Structures)


  • Lead the development of department level inquiry cycles related to our workplan goals
  • Set and refine the systems and documents used to collect inquiry cycle data
  • Support department chairs in leading their teams through inquiry cycles
  • Lead the sharing process of whole school inquiry cycles with our staff


Performance Management, Secondary Leadership Development, & Shared Leadership Structures


  • Collaborate with consultants to create, implement, and monitor high-level structures and practices for high-quality teaching and learning
  • Attend and participate in all Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) meetings and projects
  • Work closely with the Head of School and Director of Special Education to ensure progress in EL Credentialing 
  • Support the Director of Special Education in holding teachers accountable for meeting a high bar for student performance including requirements for 504 accommodations, IEP modifications, and counseling needs


Professional Development


  • Regularly review and provide feedback on meeting agendas and PDs delivered by teachers and/or leaders
  • Lead the development of department chairs as instructional coaches
  • Lead PD that trains staff members in Launch’s curricular systems and key pedagogical issues
  • Attend EL PDs and other PDs that will support the school’s workplan goals
  • Weekly 1:1 with Head of School to review progress towards goals, current and upcoming projects and workflows


Domain #2: Leadership Visibility & Relationship Building

Support the development of a culture of trust, investment in goals, and ownership among staff by consistently hypermodeling the organization's core values.

Partnering w/ & Engaging All Stakeholders

  • Attend all critical big school events (SLCs, Passages, New Family Night, Black History Celebration, etc) and some smaller events (occasional PA meeting)
  • Attend all student recruitment events (in-person and virtual)
  • Attend family meetings and conferences when appropriate
  • Support charter renewal process 
  • Bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with department chairs to support their work
  • Collaborate with other staff leaders on community events like Career Day, Literacy events, and others



The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5+ years teaching experience in middle school classrooms in an urban setting
  • Leadership experience 
  • Master’s degree
  • Unwavering commitment to Launch’s mission and to the EL Education model
  • Exceptional ability to demonstrate our operating values in every aspect of their work
  • Exceptional ability to develop and maintain productive and collaborative relationships
